December: Winter Horror

by Crystal Connor

Lol, I’m sorry I couldn’t help it. This post is about Winter Horror, which is the theme this month on HorrorAddicts.net.

As both a horror author and fan one of my favorite things I enjoy writing about is and being entertained by is the psychological side of horror.

I’m not sure if you know this but I am classically trained as a Marine Diesel Engineer and the 1st time I went to Dutch Harbor I fell to my knees once on the dock. The captain had no idea what was going on and when he asked I replied, “I’m repenting because if I don’t a frozen wasteland just like this will be my Hell.”

If you could have seen the look on his face! Lol. The idea of being trapped and cold in a hell frozen over inspires me to go to confessional, and I’m not Catholic, I’m a Christian … but still. My sinning ass needs all the help I can get.

I think the three greatest contributors which has the potential to make the winter months so truly terrifying are Freezing Temperatures, Being Lost and Isolation, the induction of the fear that follows.

I think this is the reason I am such a fan of trapped environments. My all-time favorite of this troupe is when environment one is trapped in is a vast and open space, hellscapes of snow and ice.

Let’s explore these elements with a little shameless self-promotion served on the side…

Freezing Temperatures:

Barrow, Alaska is one of the coldest and remote settlements in the North America. With wind chill, temperatures can reach almost minus 100 degrees Fahrenheit. I said minus 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Just let that sink in for a moment.

It doesn’t matter if its 65 degrees or God forbid, even colder than that, once I’m cold, I’m cold and the only thing I really think about once I’m cold is getting warm again and I’m in a pretty crappy mode until that happens. And until that happens its safe to say I’m not thinking straight because all I’m always thinking about is how cold I am and longing for the time I spent in warmer climates.

Studies have shown that temperature may sway how much trust people put in one another so it’s not surprising that people link temperature with psychological mindset (cold-bloodied killer)

Being Lost:

Now being lost is completely different from being trapped or isolated. When you’re lost, at least at first, it’s the confusion that interrupts clear thinking. But you can always cling to hope when lost.

If your off hiking somewhere, or take the wrong turn during a road trip and don’t show up when and where you were expected you’re going to be missed and this is what eventually helps a person to stop randomly wandering around and talk themselves into some sort of game plan to get them found or at the very least, help them get their bearings back.

This is where the wisdom of walking along a fence or river or just being still so that whoever is looking for you can actually find you comes in.

But if your judgment has been impaired due to being cold, and you’ve been subjected to the imagination of novelist such as myself, once it gets dark all bets are off. Of course you’ll worry about the bear’s, wild dogs, and other dangerous animals but not as much as you’ll think about the ghosts and strangers lurking between the clumps of trees, no matter how unrealistic these fears may be, and that will more likely than not make a person make drastic decisions that will make their situation worse.

Isolation:

First of all you know exactly where you are and others might too, but when things go wrong you can’t get out and those on the outside who know where you are probably don’t know you’re in trouble and wouldn’t expect it as your exactly where you told everyone you’d be.

And this is the reason I say a person can be cold, scared, and lost … or … cold, scared, and isolated. I’ve never seen or read a book where people where both isolated and lost at the same time.

One of the great things about using isolation as a horror element (Claustrophobia, agoraphobia, taphophobia, merinthophia, autophobia … the list goes on and on) and the adverse psychological effects it has on just basic thinking, not to mention, critical potentially lifesaving decision making is what makes isolation so terrorizing on so many levels. Not only that, but all kinds of studies have been conducted on human subjects in regards to extreme isolation and solitary confinement … the results of all of which is why this type of sensory deprivation is considered torture.

This is the type of subject I can write all day long about so instead of letting this post get out of hand I’m going to give you guys a little homework! lol

Homework for couch potatoes:

Three good reads that I think you should read if you haven’t already (or read again if its been awhile) about winter horror using the elements of isolation are:

Trapped by Dean R. Koontz http://www.amazon.com/Trapped-Dean-R-Koontz/dp/0061050040

The Shining by Stephen King  http://www.amazon.com/The-Shining-Stephen-King/dp/0307743659

In The Foothills of Mt. Empyreal The End is Now by Connor Titus http://www.amazon.com/In-The-Foothills-Mt-Empyreal/dp/1494964198

Three movies using the same elements

Adam Green’s 2010 Frozen

John Carpenter’s 2011 The Thing

Antonia Bird’s 2009 Ravenous

Home work for outdoorsy type:

If you rather not sit inside all winter and would rather risk your life by actually testing the patience of the gods of winter, you could try (but I am going to suggest that you don’t) your hand at navigating your way through:

 Death zone, Mt. Everest, Nepal

Dudes it’s called the Death Zone, even experienced climbers have perished here, and since rescuing or carrying an injured climber back to basecamp is impractical, they are typically left behind to die. About 150 bodies have never been recovered but despite its names there are worst places to die a wintery death.

Muir Snowfield, Mt. Rainier, WA

Like they say, there’s no place like home! Rainier’s summit requires a formidable alpine climb, and more than 90 mountaineers have slipped or frozen trying to reach 14,410 feet. But a whopping 294 fatalities have occurred elsewhere on the mountain

Right in my own back yard, Willamette National Forest, Oregon

A staggering 189 men and 51 women officially remain listed as missing since 1997 by the Oregon Office of Emergency Management after trekking into Oregon’s wildest places, said Georges Kleinbaum, search and rescue coordinator for the office. “It only takes a mile before you get totally turned around and don’t know which way to go,” said Kleinbaum, adding that 1,036 search and rescue missions were conducted across Oregon last year.

 Bonus

You really can’t talk about the horrors of winter without mentioning Christmas. My 2nd favorite all time sub-genre of Horror is Religious Horror and actually I think that might be 1st.  As a believer there is nothing more frightening to me than the idea of God turning his back on you, succumbing to temptation and forfeiting your admission to Heaven.

If you don’t have a weekend to spend reading a book but a have a few hours to kill check out Christopher Borrelli’s 2007 Whisper besides the child being the offspring of Satan, the religious undertones are subtle

However if you prefer your Christmas horror to be terrifying and religious-less I highly recommend Paul Andrew Williams 2008 The Children which is part of the 8 Films to Die For franchise. You can watch them both on either Amazon Video or Netflix

If you like your horror in quick short dosages I have something that fits the bill, clocking in at just 12 minutes and 9 seconds this little audio gem will fit nicely in your standard 15 minute coffee break The Christmas Wish http://podiobooks.com/title/and-they-all-lived-happily-ever-after/

And on that note, happy holidays you guys and as always thanks for stopping by! See you all next year!

Press Release: Wind Walkers Takes the Last Spot of the Horror Festival

SPIRITS ARE HIGH AS THE LAST SLOT OF ‘8 FILMS TO DIE FOR’ IS ANNOUNCED!
unnamed
Wind Walkers Takes the Last Spot of the Horror Festival

windwalkers_475x700Los Angeles, CA (August 27, 2015) – Once again Courtney Solomon showcases yet another heart lurching horror under his company After Dark Films. Wind Walkers, a spine-chilling Native American tale set in the wilds of Florida, will be the 8th and final film in the ‘8 Films to Die For’ horror festival, in theaters October 16, 2015.

Written and Directed by talented filmmaker Russell Friedenberg, and Produced by Iron Circle Pictures and Sweet Tomato Films, Wind Walkers will bring the first ever film with a Native American flair to the brand.   TheDark Side Magazine has referred to the film as “Unremitting and furious, Wind Walkers breathes fresh air into the genre.”

“We’ve saved the most unique for last,” says Stephanie Caleb, EVP of Creative Affairs & Acquisitions at After Dark Films, “Wind Walkers digs deep into Native American history and the Psyche of our shared yet tortured pasts. It explores the nature of what it means to be cursed as an individual and as a community.  The gradual withering away of the collective soul and all that makes us human is on display in this horrifying tale of the violent rebalancing of natures scales.”

The film stars Phil Burke (Hell on Wheels), Russell Friedenburg (Among Ravens), Kiowa Gordon (The Twilight Saga: Eclipse), Zane Holtz (The Perks of Being a Wallflower), Christopher Kriesa (Cast Away), Castille Landon (Sex Ed), and Glen Powell Jr. (The Expendables 3; The Dark Knight Rises).

Director Friedenberg says, “I’m really excited to bring Wind Walkers into the world with After Dark and their ‘8 Films to Die For’. After Dark has proven their ability to keep the genre fresh, exciting and scary as hell.  Their brand is unparalleled and we are thrilled to be a part of it.”

Official Synopsis:

A U.S. solider returns home from captivity to find that his best friend and fellow former POW has gone AWOL. While out on an annual hunting trip with his friend’s father and some extended family, their group comes under attack by an ancient Native American curse that has mysterious connections to his best friend’s heritage and the prison in which they were once held captive.

“Wind Walkers was a blast to make and we think taking it into the world with After Dark will be equally fun,” says producers Heather Rae and Dori Sperko, “Russell’s vision plays on many levels and the genre audience is in for a wild ride!”

‘8 Films to Die For’ will be released in theaters on October 16, 2015, with Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment handling all ancillary forms of media, including Digital HD™, DVD and VOD.

Ian Brereton negotiated the deal on behalf of After Dark Films.

About After Dark Films:

After Dark Films is an Independent motion picture studio formed in 2006 by director/filmmaker Courtney Solomon and Hong Kong based real estate magnate Allan Zeman. After Dark Films’ first motion picture film release was An American Haunting (2006) starring Sissy Spacek and Donald Sutherland. Co-founder and CEO Courtney Solomon wrote, produced, and directed this film under the newly formed After Dark Films banner. An American Haunting reached number two at the box office the opening week of its release.

After the release of An American Haunting, partners Solomon and Zeman formed a multiyear marketing and distribution deal for Horrorfest “8 Films To Die For” between After Dark Films and Lionsgate Entertainment, with After Dark handling theatrical marketing & releases and Lionsgate handling the distribution of all the ancillary forms of media (Home Video, Pay TV, Pay Per View). After Dark Films released Horrorfest 4 in theaters on January 29, 2010.

Building on the success of Horrorfest, After Dark released their first 8 originally produced horror films in January 2011 under the moniker After Dark Originals. After Dark Originals 2 was released in the third quarter of 2013.

After Dark Films and Dark Castle Entertainment debuted their new action movie franchise After Dark Action in 2012. The first generation of After Dark Action included five original, adrenaline pumping films starring international stars such as Jean-Claude Van Damme, Dolph Lundgren, Peter Weller, Jim Caviezel, Cung Le and Christian Slater. After Dark Action showcased the movies theatrically as a commercial film festival in markets nationwide and VOD on May 11th, 2012 with After Dark handling the theatrical marketing & releases and Warner Brothers Entertainment handling the distribution of the ancillary forms of media (Home Video, VOD, Pay Per View, etc.).

Press Release: BASTARD TAKES THE 7TH SLOT OF ‘8 FILMS TO DIE FOR’

THE 80’S ARE BACK AND BLOODIER THAN EVER AS BASTARD TAKES THE 7TH SLOT OF ‘8 FILMS TO DIE FOR’
unnamed
This SLASH From the PAST Will Leave You Shaking in the Dark!
Los Angeles, CA (August 25, 2015) – Remember those classic 80’s slasher movies that were all the rave?  Well, hold on to your heads, we’re bringing it back to the extreme. Bastard will be the 7th film in the ‘8 Films to Die For’ lineup, in theaters October 16, 2015.
Bastard encompasses all the classic qualities that horror fans crave,” says Franchesca Lantz, Director of Creative Affairs & Acquisitions at After Dark Films, “it’s hard to watch, yet it’s impossible to look away.”
Written by Patrick Robert Young and directed by Powell Robinson and Patrick Robert Young, this character-driven film has been referred to as a “Triumph for independent horror.”
The film stars Tonya Kay (Get Him to the Greek), Rebekah Kennedy (Season of the Witch), Burt Culver (The Paper Boat), Ellis Greer (A Small Death), Dan Creed (Dinner Party), and Will Tranfo (The Creation of Aspen).
Bastard is a labor of horror love crafted on a budget of blood, sweat, and visceral synth score,” says directors Powell Robinson and Patrick Robert Young,  “Shot under the influence of Tom Savini and Jamie Lee Curtis’ lungs, Bastard hearkens back to a time when people couldn’t complain about the state of horror.  Our approach was not to spoof or make fun of these old slashers, but rather embrace the mindset of how these films were made, and make our story with the same technique and passion. We wanted to give our fellow horror lovers the 80’s cult flick they never got to see in theaters – the one that inspires them to go out and make their own.  Because that’s what films like Halloween, My Bloody Valentine, and Zombi have done for us.”

Official Synopsis:
Five strangers – newlywed serial killers, a suicidal cop, and two runaways – become suspect and victim when a masked murderer makes its presence known in an isolated mountain town.

Elsa Ramo negotiated on behalf of the filmmakers.

Press Release: THERE’S SOMETHING TWISTED ABOUT THE 6TH ADDITION TO ‘8 FILMS TO DIE FOR

THERE’S SOMETHING TWISTED ABOUT THE 6TH ADDITION TO ‘8 FILMS TO DIE FOR’
 unnamed
Unnatural attacks the Next Slot in the Horror Festival

unnatural_475x700
Los Angeles, CA (August 18, 2015) – Courtney Solomon’s After Dark Films is set to release the next ravenous horror film Unnatural in the ‘8 Films to Die For’ horror line up, hitting theaters October 16, 2015.  This latest addition travels us to the cold stark Alaskan wilderness promising plenty of screams with no one to hear them.

Written by Ron Carlson & Arch Stanton, directed by Hank Braxtan and produced by Ron Carlson, the film preys on our fear of the unknown and the Unnatural.

“This film takes us far from Civilization to the land of blood and snow, where it answers the age old question of what happens when Man plays God” says Stephanie Caleb, EVP of Creative Affairs & Acquisitions at After Dark Films.

The film stars James Remar (Dexter), Sherilyn Fenn (Rude Awakening), Graham Greene (The Green Mile), Stephanie Hodes (Life Blood), Q’orianka Kilcher (The New World), Ivana Korab (If You Only Knew), Ray Wise (RoboCop), and Allegra Carpenter (The Fault in Our Stars).

“I really tried to take an old school approach to the movie,” said director Hank Braxtan, “we shot on anamorphic lenses, and I tried to do every gag, kill, and effect in camera.  Our bear is a real animatronics monster, made by masters of the craft, so what you see on screen is really there.  It was a challenge, as it always is with practicals, but that’s the magic of filmmaking.”

Official Synopsis:

A morally ambiguous corporation experiments with genetic modification resulting in the creation of a man-hunting creature. When it escapes, a group of unsuspecting cabin dwellers become its prey in a horrifying game of cat and mouse.

‘8 Films to Die For’ will be released in theaters on October 16, 2015, with Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment handling all ancillary forms of media, including Digital HD™, DVD and VOD.

“We shot this film further north in the month of January than any other feature known to date,” says producer Ron Carlson, “it was 40 degrees below zero and I said to myself, ‘if the cold doesn’t kill us, this Thing certainly will.’ ”

Ian Brereton negotiated the deal on behalf of After Dark Films.

suspension_475x700Los Angeles, CA (August 13, 2015) – The 5th spot in Courtney Solomon’s ‘8 Films to Die For’ by After Dark Films has been taken.  Suspension, directed by Jeffery Scott Lando (Decoys 2: Alien Seduction), will be the next film in the famed horror festival, in theaters throughout the U.S. October 16, 2015.

This visually stunning film is a follow up to Jeffrey Lando and Kevin Mosley’s Savage Island.

“Lock your doors,” says Franchesca Lantz, Director of Creative Affairs & Acquisitions at After Dark Films, “the creepy creativity and wicked imagination oozing from this film will get you.”

Suspension was written by Kevin Mosley (Puppet Killer) and produced by Jeffery Scott Lando.  Sage Brocklebank (Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore) produced and starred in the film.

“We worked harder to engineer Suspension than anything I’ve ever worked on before,” says director/producer Jeffery Lando, “It’s a real love letter to horror films. The real horror films, the ones that keep us suspended between terror and ecstasy throughout and reveal aspects of ourselves that we’d rather ignore. I’m thrilled to be getting to share our movie with real genre fans.”

Also starring is Ellen MacNevin (Supernatural), Steve Richmond (iZombie), Rustin Gresiuk (Flicka: Country Pride), Taylor Russell (Falling Skies), and two-time Ampia Best Actor award winner Duncan Ollerenshaw (Hell on Wheels).

“I couldn’t be happier with ‘Suspension’ being part of the After Dark ‘8 Films to Die For’ Festival. It’s truly an honor,” says screenwriter Kevin Mosley, “Jeffery and myself had been wanting to make Suspension for years; a project that began as a traditional slasher film but evolved into something much more complex. I can’t wait for the horror fans to see it and I am thrilled that After Dark will be bringing it to them.”

Ian Brereton negotiated the deal on behalf of After Dark Films.  Sam Eigen and Lauren Basch of Shoreline Entertainment negotiated the deal on behalf of the production.

Official Synopsis:

Emily is a high-school student with a penchant for drawing gruesome pictures in her sketchbook. There’s a reason for her obsession with horrific images: Her father Tom once went on a murder spree and is now residing in a mental hospital. On a night she’s home alone babysitting her mute little brother, Tom escapes and targets Emily and her friends during a bloody killing rampage.

“All of us at Shoreline are proud of Jeffery Lando’s film and the fantastic early reviews,” says Morris Ruskin, CEO and Founder of Shoreline Entertainment. “We strongly believe that After Dark has the marketing vision to successfully release this exceptionally scary, yet clever film in North America.”

‘8 Films to Die For’ will be released in theaters on October 16, 2015, with Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment handling all ancillary forms of media, including Digital HD™, DVD and VOD.

After Dark Films: Fertile Ground

AFTER DARK FILMS ANNOUNCES NEXT ORIGINAL TITLE
FIFTH TITLE, FERTILE GROUND, IS ROOTED IN FEAR AND GHOSTLY FANTASY

Los Angeles, CA (August 20, 2010) — After Dark Films CEO Courtney Solomon continues the
momentum of After Dark Originals “A New Brand of Fear” with his announcement of the bonechilling
5th film, Fertile Ground. Writer/Director Adam Gierasch (Autopsy, Night of the Demons)
co-wrote this film together with Jace Anderson. The film stars Leisha Hailey (The L Word) and
Gale Harold (Queer as Folk, Desperate Housewives).

Emily and Nate Weaver leave the city for the rural comfort of Nate’s ancestral home in the
country. Once there, Emily is plagued by horrifying visions and haunted by the ghosts
inhabiting their isolated new home. When Nate’s behavior undergoes a strange and fearful
metamorphous, Emily fears she might be the latest target in a murderous tradition.

Producer Solomon states, “Leisha Hailey is completely convincing as a woman in peril. As the
plot thickens, twists and surprises unfold that keep the viewer engaged and in constant
suspense.”

AFTER DARK FILMS ANNOUNCES FOURTH FILM OF NEW SERIES
THE TASK TAKES TO REALITY AS THE LATEST “AFTER DARK ORIGINALS” FILM

Los Angeles, CA (April 26, 2010) — After Dark Films CEO Courtney Solomon announces The
Task as Film #4 in the AFTER DARK ORIGINALS series, in partnership with Lionsgate and
Syfy. This gritty film, written by Kenny Yakkel (Exorcism Diaries, Dead Air), stars Texas Battle
(Final Destination 3), Alexandra Staden (Basic Instinct 2), and Jonas Talkington (Harpies).

Something diabolical is taking place on the set of The Task, a new reality show in which players
complete terrifying missions within the confines of an abandoned prison hoping to win a hefty
cash prize. As six young students explore their new environment, malicious spirits make their
presence known in the most gruesome ways imaginable. Unable to escape the labyrinthine
prison, the contestants become unwitting pawns caught at the center of a blood-soaked night of
terror.

“We are all xenophobic to some degree”, says Solomon. “The question this film really poses is,
‘Does anyone have the guts or strength to face those fears with blind faith, without knowing
what lay on the other side’”.

AFTER DARK FILMS ANNOUNCES: SECONDS APART

AFTER DARK FILMS ANNOUNCES SEVENTH ORIGINAL TITLE
SECONDS APART PACKS A TERRIFYING ONE-TWO PUNCH

Los Angeles, CA (Dec. 9th, 2010) — After Dark Films CEO Courtney Solomon has announced, SECONDS APART, as part of the After Dark Originals “A New Brand of Fear” line-up. The film is directed by award winning short-film director Antonio Negret (Towards Darkness) and stars Orlando Jones (Beyond a Reasonable Doubt, Evolution) and twins Gary Entin (Rest Stop, The Seeker) & Edmund Entin (Rest Stop, The Seeker, The New Daughter).

Seth and Jonah are murderous twins who share an evil kinship. Damned from the moment of their births, the brothers possess a talent for telekinesis – a power they are suspected of misusing in the most horrific ways imaginable. As fellow students meet gory fates, a local investigator suspects the twins are connected to these gruesome murders, culminating in one final showdown of brother against brother, evil against evil.

Says Producer Courtney Solomon, “Everyone’s heard about that creepy ‘twin thing.’” You just can’t under-estimate the power of twins, and this film is seasoned by the exceptional performances of Gary and Edmund Entin”.

Seconds Apart, from Executive Producers Courtney Solomon and Stephanie Caleb, was shot in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. A release date for Seconds Apart and all eight Originals is scheduled for late January 2011. The series was developed in partnership with Lionsgate. Exclusive content can be found on facebook at www.facebook.com/secondsapartmovie

After Dark Films made an unprecedented commitment to the production of eight original horror films this year under the After Dark Originals “A New Brand of Fear” label, continuing the Company’s mission of supporting first time independent film writers and directors. The creation
of the AD Originals slate is just another example of the Company’s commitment to the indie film industry.

Unlike After Dark’s “8 Films To Die For®”, After Dark Originals are wholly financed and produced by After Dark Films. The ADO slate runs the gamut of the genre, from paranormal phenomena, black magic, and vengeful ghosts to psychological trauma, murderous psychopaths, vampires and the undead. After Dark polled its fans and is delivering the kinds of movies they asked for!
