Ghastly Games by Daphne Strasert: Dead Men Tell No Tales

Game Review: Dead Men Tell No Tales

Who doesn’t love pirates? Who doesn’t love undead pirates even more?

In Dead Men Tell No Tales, players take on the characters of a pirate crew and work together to plunder a burning ship, the notorious Skelit’s Revenge. They must defeat the undead crew, find the treasure, and fight the fire to stay alive. Do you have what it takes to survive and win?

Dead Men Tell No Tales is a thematic cooperative board game for 2-5 players and takes about 90 minutes to play.

Game Play

First, choose a character. All characters have different abilities that will help during play (extra speed, fighting power, rum capacity, etc.). Next, board the Skelit’s Revenge and start looking for treasure. You explore the ship, finding new rooms and revealing new obstacles.

Oh, and all the rooms are on fire.

You take damage when exposed to the flames, so as you explore, you’ll need to take time to rest your character—valuable time that could be used fighting the Skelit’s crew. Defeat the crew to find the treasure. Find all the treasure and get it back to your boat to win. Be warned, the fire gets worse and the enemies increase with every turn, so winning won’t be easy.

Game Experience

The game quality is very high. There are many pieces, but each is crafted with either hardy cardboard or wood. All character pieces are exquisitely decorated with detailed fantasy art that fits with the theme. The well-made setup makes the game a physical joy to play.

As far as gameplay, Dead Men Tell No Tales is complicated. There are a lot of things happening at once and it will take a few tries to really get a handle on what strategies work. I have never actually won a game of Dead Men Tell No Tales (and we’ve been playing on easy mode). There is a lot going on; between character powers, monster moves, a raging fire, and explosions, you can lose track of what danger is most immediately threatening.

There are many ways to lose, but only one way to win. There’s some serious strategy involved in playing and I cannot emphasize enough that the game is cooperative. You are working together as a team so—depending on who you choose to play with—you may not feel as if you’re making any of your own decisions at all.

As much as I emphasize the difficulty, the game is fun. I promise. Dead Men Tell No Tales is all about moves, finding the best thing to do from a long list of possibilities. But it isn’t just pure strategy either—luck is just another skill in a pirate’s arsenal.

Final Thoughts

Dead Men Tell No Tales is a good game for those who like a challenge and have experience playing complicated games. There are a lot of moving pieces. This isn’t Chutes and Ladders; no one wins for just showing up. You’ll want your wits about you (so, not a great game for drinking) and every move has potentially dire consequences (so, not a great game for children). If you really think you have what it takes to take on the challenge, look no further.

Ghastly Games: Minecraft – Halloween Texture Pack

GhastlyGames2

Most everyone has heard of Minecraft, but for those of you who don’t play, you may not understand exactly what it is.
0922161518aImagine you could build a world with streets, neighborhoods, amusement parks, and underwater cities. Then imagine that if you were bored with the normal world you could put a sweater on it for any type of texture you want. Say it’s Christmas time, you could put a Christmas sweater on your entire world. The basics would still be the same, you still have your museum and opera house in the middle of town, but now it has Christmas lights all over it.

When I first started playing Minecraft I didn’t really understand the coolness of it all. I mean, I was able to build buildings in Sims and in Second Life, no big deal. But in Minecraft you can change those buildings and roads by simply changing textures. Depending on how you want to experience the world that is the covering you choose. They have many different textures. Some of my favorites are Halo, Skyrim, Christmas, Candyland, and of course Halloween.

That’s right, there is a Minecraft theme for our dark little horror hearts. They did everything from changing the animals to skeletons and mummies, to changing the beds to coffins and making the blocks all our favorite colors.

0922161530There are many different ways to play Minecraft beyond the texture packs. They also have skin packs so your character can look like your favorite movie character or dress up as a skeleton for Halloween. You can play Minecraft like I do, in the creative peaceful mode where you can build to your heart’s content without having to earn things, or you can play like my husband plays on survival mode where you have to earn every single thing you get and to survive you’re going to have to kill cows and other animals to eat. You also have to grow your own crops and make sure you’re protected at night time because that’s when the zombies, skeletons, spiders, and endermen come out to attack. I just hope you made some swords to fight back with. There are also these scary monsters called creepers who blow up on you. In survival mode, you can die, so make sure you’re protected before you go out at night or go exploring those caves. I don’t like the stress of playing in survival, but my husband likes trying to survive as if a real zombie apocalypse has happened.

Now, all forms of Minecraft have two alternate worlds contained within that require the production of portals to get to. The Ender Portal takes you to a land where there’s a giant dragon trying to kill you. The Nether Portal takes you to Hell, where a whole other cast of monsters try to kill you, but if you’re lucky you’ll find a castle or stronghold fit for a demon lord.

0922161517aA special note for those playing on Xbox One, the Halloween texture pack was updated last year and contains some animated things like the vampire roses that try to chomp you, the bouncing skull flowers, bloodied-toothed cacti, and blocks that have eyes peeking out between floorboards. Also, the same texture pack comes with a Halloween town sample that you should look at before you start building your own world. The sample features a haunted house, a spooky town that looks like Harry Potter’s, and a massive roller coaster that goes through a clown’s mouth and down a monster’s gullet.

If you’re thinking about trying out Minecraft, now is the best time. The Halloween texture packs are only available during October, so if you want to try it out, you must be on watch soon. Happy mining!

Horror Gaming: Rise of Nightmares

This new video game from Sega reminds me so much of one my husband loved playing back in the old PC days – Killing Time. The music and setting is very reminiscent of it. If you ever played Killing Time, or just enjoy a good zombie killing, check this out.

Rise of Nightmares heightens the horror experience like never before, forcing you to use your whole body against your enemies. Using cutting-edge technology, you will be trapped in a nightmare-world of zombies, monsters and hellish scientists – the only way out is to fight. The nightmare will rise exclusively on Kinect for Xbox 360 on September 6, 2011.

Horror Gaming Buzz: Dead Island

Dead Island is a game being produced by Techland. It’s a third-person action game where zombies attack a family on vacation on a tropical island. The trailer below gives you just a taste of what is to come. The projected release date is September of 2011.

Dead Island Cinematic Debut Trailer [HD]
Developer: Techland
Genre: FPS
Platform: PS3/X360/PC
Publisher: Deep Silver
Set in an open world tropical island, hordes of different festering zombies await players around every corner while they embark on a variety of thrilling missions through the holiday resort. With firearms and ammunition being scarce the player must rely on utilizing found items as weapons for self-defense and fight off zombie hordes in intense melee combat. A diverse range of items can be collected and will later serve to transform the player’s ordinary makeshift weapons into serious instruments of destruction.

I felt the trailer, although slow, was awesome to watch. It was almost like a movie as it shows you a sequence of events, running forward and back, until they meet in the middle. I know a few zombie game fanatics who are going to love this one!
