Destini Beard is a dark lyrical soprano in the Gothic and Horror soundtrack genre. She debuted as the first vocalist for the Horror Soundtrack group, Midnight Syndicate. Her two albums, “The Dark Masquerade,” and, “A Time Forgotten,” have been enjoyed by fans for over a decade. Performing across the US and abroad, she continues to add a dark twist to all her musical creations. I’ve had the pleasure of gaining early access to the remarkable electropop and industrial influenced upcoming album Scary World by the LA-based duo “Night Club”. Scary World is slotted to be released worldwide on the 24th of August 2018 featuring the single “Your Addiction”.
Night Club’s production value is incredibly professional, masterfully compressed drums and seamlessly arpeggiated basslines building a strong and driving foundation for the music. Emphasizing electro synth wails and sirens accentuate energy and drive when necessary, but are used sparingly enough that they deliver a strong enough punch each time that it never gets old. Their vocalist’s gentle and almost tantalizing voice offers a beautiful contrast to the instrumentals, offering chiming innocence during moments of tension, and an extra dose of adrenaline when the synths take a back seat.
The album immediately sets its own stage and carries the theme unadultered from beginning to end. Yet, despite using relatively similar thick and minimalistic synth sounds and stylistic techniques throughout, each song proudly speaks for itself and never falls into the easy trap of becoming a parody of itself. The album climaxes with my personal favourite on the album, Survive, easily leaving me wanting more from them.
Night Club is currently on tour with Combichrist and Wednesday 13 across Europe and the United Kingdom on the “Everybody Still Hates You” tour, and I personally will be sure to catch their Sheffield date on the 10th of August. I would highly recommend for anyone else along the tour route to be sure to pick up tickets for a show near them soon as well!

Horror Addicts Theme Song Winner, Valentine Wolfe- By Dawn Wood
South Carolinians, Braxton Ballew (electric upright bass and electronics) and Sarah Black (vocals and electronics) have been composing for the band since the inception in 2006. They describe their music as “macabre melodies”. Their lyrics to “Darkling, listen off of the Nightingale” are a direct tribute to “Ode to a Nightingale” by John Keats. Their gothic metal music is heavily inspired by all things Victorian, including literature, poetry, history, and even new media (Penny Dreadful anyone?). Their scores have been heard in productions of The Merchant of Venice, The Tempest (Warehouse Theater), The Winter’s Tale (Furman University), and Twelfth Night (The Distracted Globe). Both hold graduate degrees from the University of Georgia, where they studied electronic composition with Dr. Leonard V. Ball. In addition, Sarah completed her Masters degree in composition studying with Dr. Adrian P. Childs. She currently studies voice with Lisa Barksdale from Furman University. Braxton holds a DMA in Double Bass Performance and has studied with Milton Masciadri, Albert Laszlo, and James Barket. He is the Education Director of the Greenville Symphony Orchestra and a member of the double bass section.
Braxton uses effects to enhance the vast sound scapes from his bass, sounding at times like a cello or violin. He plays an electric upright bass for their gothic metal projects. He loves to push the boundaries of traditional bass playing and create new worlds and soundscapes with his instrument. All of the layers that sound like a guitar or cello or bass are performed with his electric upright bass (currently, an ND Designs CR5M). He runs his sound through a Blackstar amp and a Sansamp Paradriver Di and uses a Boss RC300 looper pedal.

I have been blessed to be surrounded by such talent, living here in the great Northwest. There are many male-fronted amazing bands in the Gothic/Industrial/Metal genres here. A charismatic, strong female-fronted act is a rare gem and something that, as a strong female in the business, always inspires and delights me. Alicen Hensley, AKA mAdAlice, from the Portland area, is one of those inspirations.
Vocalist, Songwriter and Artist mAdAlice was born Alicen Hensley from Anaconda, Montana. Her musical concept, mAdAlice, is an up-and-coming metal project that began in 2010. After being rejected by a few bands, Alicen decided to take matters into her own hands. She attended audio engineering school to network in the industry. Soon after graduating she met mAdAlice co-writer/co-producer Matt Jefferson. With her lyrics, music concepts and ideas for the songs, the two worked on the project for three years. The results are the five-song EP, entitled Skin. Skin was released on Beltane April 30th,2014. A few months after releasing her first EP, Alicen met co-writer, Arnold Hablewitz and the two began working together. June 21st, 2015 Mad Alice released a single “Bless the Bitch” off her upcoming album set to release Halloween 2015.

I don’t consider myself to be a big music person but every once in a while I come across a musician that grabs my attention. Venus De Vilo is an artist that grabbed my attention. Venus is a rare bread, it’s not often that you find music that combines horror and comedy and can easily fits into genres such as goth rock, metal, acoustic rock and punk rock, but her music does just that.
Venus De Vilo was described as the love child of Marilyn Manson and Amanda Palmer by the Goth Alternative magazine The Bite. She has also been described as The Voice Of Horror and Queen Of The Pumpkin Patch. She lives in Dublin Ireland and performs ghoulish themed weird concerts in metal bars, rock bars, and in cabaret and burlesque shows.
Venus’s first EP was released on Halloween 2012 and called Edgar Allen Ho. It included songs such as The Heartless Horseman and Miss Frankenstein and was well received by fans of horror and dark music. Her next release was Til Death Do Us Part in 2013.This one had a good mix of hard rocking songs that you could dance to and acoustic versions of the same songs with creepy lyrics to boot.
Venus De Vilo’s latest EP came out earlier this year and is called Handle With Scare. When I first heard this EP it put a huge smile on my face. I enjoy music that has a rawness to it but also has a passion to it and its obvious Venus De Vilo puts a lot of passion into her work. Handle With Scare has a psychobilly sound to it with a great acoustic guitar work and awesome lyrics. Listening to it, I thought that the lyrics must have been hard to record. Venus has a great voice and easily hits high notes and can sing in a low voice as well. All three of Venus De Vilo’s EPs are available on Sound Cloud and are well worth your time. My thoughts on each track on Handle With Scare are listed below:
2. Absinthe Makes The Heart Grow Fonder: This one sounds like it would be hard to sing live but I’m sure Venus can pull it off. I have to describe this as a love song with a bizarre twist.
3. BubbleGlum! Venus shows she has a great sense of humor in this song. I love the lyric “Misery loves bubbleglum.”
4. Dead! Dead! Dead! Great vocal work in this song and the music made me thing a little of mariachi surf music if that makes sense. I can see this as a good dance song.
5. The Dead Don’t Dance. This is a slower song with great singing.I love the harmonies in it.
6. Personal Satan. I think this is the best one on Handle With Scare. I love the clapping in the song, this would be a great live track.
In the future Venus De Vilo plans on releasing a full length album, a book of poetry called Creepy Like Sunday Mourning and she also has a comic out based on Edgar Allen Poe’s The Raven. To find out more about her check out these links:
