Black Jack

Final6x9-200x300Hey Horror Addicts, On this season of the horror addict’s podcast we will once again be having an audio drama that will be running season long. Starting with episode 111 you will be able to hear Dan Shaurette’s story Black Jack. Dan is a  staff writer at horroraddicts.net and his story Black Magic ran during season 8 of the horror addict podcast. Black Jack will be a full audio production with multiple voices and sound effects that you won’t want to miss. To get a feel for what to expect from Dan’s story I asked him a few questions about his work:

What is your story about?
Without giving away too much, the story is about Jacob Springer and his investigation into who killed his mother. It is set around the murderous reign of terror committed by Jack the Ripper in Whitechapel, 1888.

What inspired you to write it?
While writing Black City, my current novel in progress, I created Jacob Springer initially as a throwaway character, but he wasn’t too keen on that. He’s a bit of a rogue, you see. So as he became more involved in the story, I gave him a back-story, which evolved into this tale, Black Jack. Much like the side bits I discovered while writing Black Magic, it was the discovery of butchered bodies dumped in the Thames River and around town that are not (usually) attributed to Jack the Ripper. These killings started about a year or so before, occurred during, and lasted a year or two after Jack’s ripping spree took place. They made headlines, usually being blamed on Jack, but the police kept them separate while investigating because they were a different style of mutilations. It was the story of a victim who was unnamed at first, but later called “Fairy Fay”, that gave me the core of the tale.

5791268Who are some of the voices who will be in it?
In addition to Emerian Rich who brings voice to three different characters, my good friends and local podcasters Jack Mangan and Dani Cutler were roped in to help. Murdo Morrison and Mat Weller who voiced MacGillivray and Black in Black Magic are back. I also worked with Lucie Le Blanc again, who provided the voice of Abby from my Masters of Macabre story a few years back. She directed me to contact the phenomenal Veronica Giguere. Rounding out the cast are Pete Lutz, Sean Young, Glenn Hibburt, and Ted Wenskus, all of whom answered the call online for voices, and each and every one has been a pleasure to work with, and I hope to work with them again.

What can we expect in upcoming episodes?
Fairies, demons, and serial killers, oh my. Oh yes, there will be blood and gore. Gee, I hope this is the right place for that.

What do you like about this time period?
Especially this time period, the one dominated by Jack the Ripper, I find it fascinating researching the life and time of these people. Whitechapel was a piss-poor place to live back then, and the Ripper was a truly frightening killer. It was a dark and horrifying time and the mystery of who Jack the Ripper really was lingers to this day. In this story, I advance my theory as to who the Ripper might have been — had they been assisted by some supernatural elements, of course.

Is it related to your story Black Magic or Lilith’s Love?
Black Jack is a direct prequel to my novel, Black City, which Black Magic was a parallel story to. In Black City, Jacob Springer teams up with Matt Black and Andrew MacGillivray to find out who is killing women during the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago. If my stories were compared to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, these would be two stand-alone origin stories with Black City being The Avengers. With that analogy, Lilith’s Love is like one of the Spider-man movies — it came out a long time ago and you know the stories are connected somehow.

How long did it take to produce an episode?
Once everyone turns in their recorded lines to me, it takes me at least a week to edit everything together with sound effects and music to make one episode… which runs less than 10 minutes.

Will you eventually turn this into a book?
Yes, just as I did with Black Magic, I will edit and publish Black Jack. Then I have to finish up Black City before I go insane. You know, again. After that, I have so many more stories to tell, I promise, you haven’t heard the last from the Black Books.

Cheap Reads

Hey Horror Addicts, for the last couple of seasons of the horror addicts podcast I had a regular blog post/segment called Free Fiction Friday, where we gave away a paperback book. For this season I’m switching things up a little and instead of giving away a book I’m going to promote some cheap horror books that you can find on Amazon for less than $5.oo. For my first post I’m going to look at books that are available from the Horror Addicts staff. If you still want a free paperback book or to promote a book you wrote, shoot me an email at horroraddicts@gmail.com and We will hook you up.

21719117From our hostess Emerian Rich we have Night’s Knights. Vampires on a quest for knowledge attempt to create the perfect offspring, but from the shadows an even more demonic evil threatens their immortality. Markham is a simple Irish immigrant striving for the American dream in 1860 when coach robbers cause his untimely death. Severina is an exotic beauty from the jungles of Brazil whose family is brutally murdered by the same man she later calls a lover. Julien is a knight who serves as guardian angel to his family but has no clue about his predestined fate. Will a powerful mortal named Jespa be the one to save them all?

5791268Next up from Dan Shaurette we have Lilith’s Love. Donovan, lonely and getting over the recent death of his parents, asks his long-time friend Christian to move in with him when he relocates back home again to Phoenix from Los Angeles. After the Vampire Hunters find Lilith in New Orleans, she and her Wiccan friend Anna decide to go where they think no one would expect to find vampires — The Valley of the Sun, Phoenix, AZ. Christian, who is also a Wiccan, meets Anna at a Samhain event (Halloween). The chemistry between them is immediate, and when they introduce their roommates to each other, Don realizes Lilith is not only the woman of his dreams — but that she is the woman in his dreams at night.

12348944From our movie and TV guru Kristin Battestella, we have Fate And Fangs Love: Ann and The Viking. The Vampire Family has a long and torrid past, present, and future. In FATE and FANGS, the family’s Occult scholar Professor A. James shares vampire vignettes of love, punishment, struggle, debauchery, lust, humanity, and resurrection. In this medieval tale, scorned vampire mistress Ann leaves vampire family patriarch Antonio behind, travels across Britain, and encounters a wayward Viking named Eric. Will Ann accept her true vampiric nature and turn her Nordic lover into a vampire?

Also our events guy Mark Vale has a book called Silhouette available. Aaron Tate moves into a new house in a little town he doesn’t feel comfortable in. It could be he’s feeling lonely as the new kid, or it could be he doesn’t like the backyard. Or more precisely, the swamp behind the backyard.

21337311 (1)In addition to these four books from our horroraddicts staff we also have two anthologies available. The first is The Wickeds: A Wicked Women Writers AnthologyHorrorAddicts.net presents thirteen horror tales from up-and-coming women writers. This diverse collection of revenge, torture, and macabre is sure to quench any horror addict’s thirst for blood. Proceeds go to help disaster relief globally by way of the Rescue Task Force.

Black Magic by Dan Shaurette

Final6x9This season of the horror addicts podcast includes something a little different. Starting with episode 85  the podcast includes a continuing story by Dan Shaurette called Black Magic. Black Magic is an 11 part full audio production complete with sound effects and voice actors.

Black Magic takes place at the World’s Columbian Exposition that was held in Chicago during the summer of 1893. At the event there has been a violent attack by a mysterious creature. Supernatural detectives Matt Black and Andrew MacGillivray have been investigating the disappearance of several people, primarily women and it looks like the case may be related. These two men are used to dealing with strange creatures because of their off-again-on-again relationship with the Supernatural Affairs Department  which they helped create during the Civil War.

The case also draws the interest of former journalist and friend L. Frank Baum. While following the case he witnesses magic that few have experienced and is inspired to write an American classic.

Black Magic is meant to be a prequel of sorts to a novel Dan is writing called Black City. The story for Black Magic takes place after Black City but Black Magic is the first appearance of Matt Black and Andrew MacGillivary who will be the stars of Black City. Dan describes Black Magic as The Dresden Files meets The Parasol Protectorate.

IMAGE002I asked Dan how he chose the time period  for Black Magic, he said his first novel, LILITH’S LOVE, is set in Phoenix, AZ in 1993. It revolves around a character named Donovan who becomes a vampire, but it is also discovered that he had reincarnated from 1693, with other incarnations along the way. BLACK CITY and BLACK MAGIC are prequels to that and are set in 1893 because he wanted to flesh out what his incarnation from 100 years prior would have been like. As for the setting, 1893 was full of potential all over the globe. It was the Victorian era and in America we played host to the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago. As Dan became enamored with steampunk and weird westerns  he felt the setting was ripe with possibility, where science and superstition could be found together.

The inspiration for BLACK MAGIC came from several events he discovered in his research on the Expo. The first was about a Midway attraction of a tethered balloon that safely took fairgoers up and down throughout the day. On Sunday, July 9, 1893, the balloon was wrecked by a mysterious funnel cloud that appeared on what was a peaceful day in Chicago. The other key inspiration was discovering that author L. Frank Baum lived in Chicago and was a frequent visitor to the Expo.  Baum was inspired by the famous White City of the Expo to create his own Emerald City in the land of Oz. It took just a twist of artistic license to ponder what if Baum had witnessed the twister taking down the balloon ride at the Expo. This lead to the idea that other strange events and characters might also have given Baum ideas. Thus BLACK MAGIC has a witch and wizard, emeralds, magic lands, and more.
Once Dan picked the year 1893 to work with, he began researching everything he could about America in 1893.  One book in particular he used as a primary resource was THE DEVIL IN THE WHITE CITY by Erik Larson. This is a non-fiction narrative, one that weaves the historic achievement of the building of the Expo with the murderous reign of terror perpetrated by Dr. H. H. Holmes. Holmes built a macabre “castle” which he opened to renters as The World’s Fair Hotel mere blocks from the Expo. He lured in the throngs of vulnerable tourists, many of which it is believed he killed. In both cases, Larson’s book describes American ingenuity at its most glorious and most heinous. The fact that most people today have never even heard of Holmes is what probably captured Dan’s attention the most.
I also asked Dan how Matt Black and Andrew MacGillivray started working together. He said the two met during the Civil War. Matt Black was there at the start of the war (lying about his age as he was only 16) and Andrew MacGillivray was a young doctor working  during the war and saved Matt’s life. Matt came very close to death, and as a result he had disturbing visions. Mac realized they weren’t just the delusions brought on by pain, infection, and laudanum. They teamed up and uncovered sinister beings at work in the battles. They also found vampires feeding on soldiers on the battlefield. They went on to help create the supernatural affairs department which was the first secret service established. Its primary function was to combat the threat of supernatural forces like vampires, ghosts, demons, and the like.

Lilith’s Love by Dan Shaurette

To date, I’ve read Lilith’s Love twice and listened to it three times. Dan Shaurette’s cross-genre, vampire-romance is one of my favorite vampire novels. He has a fresh outlook on the vampire legend that I find especially appealing. Even though his outlook is new, he is sure to include all those yummy bits us old-school vampire lovers can really sink our teeth into.

Blending the story of vampires, witches, and mortals, he still manages to make his story believable and entertaining. The characters are so real, you wonder if he may know your friends. Or maybe that’s just me? I find it refreshing to read a love story from a man’s point of view that doesn’t involve demoralizing women and childish cat calls. No, this is real love… Lilith’s Love.

Dan Shaurette was nice enough to speak to me about his work, his love of horror, and his fanboy side.

EMZ: Where did you grow up?

DAN: I was born and raised in Phoenix, AZ. I’ve moved a few times, but never out of Arizona. I currently live in Tempe, which is not far from Phoenix. I’m totally a desert rat.

EMZ: I get visions of Mad Max! When you were a kid, what were you a fanboy of?

DAN: I’ve been reading since I was two years old so I was a voracious reader in my youth. I was a huge fan of the Encyclopedia Brown mysteries and the Choose Your Own Adventure series. My favorite movie was TRON (and TRON: Legacy made me feel old!) For TV series, I have a distinct memory of watching Doctor Who and thinking it was the coolest thing ever. As for comic books, though, I did not start reading them until I discovered that Anne Rice’s novels had been adapted to comics, and that was when I was in high school, I think.

EMZ: Oh my God, that is when I discovered comics too. Anne’s stories brought me into the culture, but once there, it allowed me to delve into Gaiman’s awesome Endless Series.

DAN: Same here, and I totally had a crush on Neil Gaiman’s DEATH.

EMZ: Hehhee, me too! I even dressed like her a couple Halloweens. So, Dan, what was the first real life experience that freaked you the hell out?

DAN: When I was very young, maybe seven years old, I was at school, and I was playing outside at recess with the other kids. I was shy and I would play in the jungle gym tubes by myself. Lost in my little world, I eventually heard someone calling for me. When I came out to see who it was, everyone was gone. When I tried to get back inside, all the doors were locked. I started panicking, but I never cried out. I kept trying the doors, looking in windows, and eventually I tried a door I know I tried before, and it was open. Once I got inside, there was nobody around. I ran to my classroom and no one was there. I checked other classrooms, and still there was no one. I eventually got to the office, and there was no one there either. I then made my way to the front door, but now I was really scared because I knew I should not leave. Just before I got to the door, it opened. It was my teacher, and she had this look of shock on her face. She told me then that everyone was leaving for a field trip, but she came back because she thought she forgot something. Not someone. Not me. She just thought she had to go back. No one missed me. No one called out for me. I just knew something was wrong and she eventually realized something was wrong, too.

EMZ: Wow. Terrifying for a child to be left behind and you remind me of the zombie movies that start where someone wakes up and everyone is gone. Perhaps we are all still a little scared of being left all alone, especially when we don’t know where the others went. Now, if you were to meet one person who would make you go all fanboy again, who would it be?

DAN: Joss Whedon, no question about it.

EMZ: Hehe. Yes, it would be hard to stay calm and cool in his presence. I think I might just bust out in song… “All the angels sing that you’re gonna die!” Let’s talk about Lilith’s Love. When you researched for the book, what kind of tools did you use?

DAN: I started writing the story in 1993, when I was a student at Arizona State University. I was a Computer Science major, so I had access to the computer commons quite often. The world wide web was in its infancy then. We had the Mosaic web browser but Gopher was the primary internet tool of the day. That only helped me find a few newsgroups mainly with folks interested in vampires. The real tool was that the Phoenix Public Library and the ASU libraries were just beginning to make their card catalogs available online. Most of my research was really done the old-fashioned way — reading books, both reference and fiction.

EMZ: And while you were reading, did you find anything out about vampires that shocked or interested you in particular?

DAN: The thing that shocked me the most, I think, was discovering that there was a real Count Dracula, aka Vlad Dracul Tepes, the Voivode of Wallachia.

EMZ: Oh yes, I remember when I found out Countess Bathroy was real. It’s hard to come to grips with these legends actually killing real people. You’ve podcast for a while and your book has been out long enough to have a following. What kind of reaction do you get from readers?

DAN: Most people who’ve read Lilith’s Love have given me extremely positive feedback. I usually hear that the story is the most believable vampire story they’ve read and that the characters are so real, like their best friends. Yes, there’s magic and yes there’s vampires, but it is a modern setting and nothing out-of-character happens. I think that is what most people identify with. In fact, the biggest complaint I get is that the book is too short and they want to know when the sequel will be coming out.

EMZ: Yeah, count me in that group. When is the sequel coming out?

DAN: Oh dear – well, I’ve got good news and bad news. The bad news is that it will be a while yet. The good news is that’s because I am working on a series of prequels. Lilith’s Love was always meant to be part of a trilogy, but while I’ve been working on it (for nearly TWENTY YEARS), it has evolved. I know how the sequel ends and I know what happens in the third book, but the core of what happens in the sequel has been fluid and elusive. As I’ve plotted it all out, it kept prompting new questions, as well as nagging me about open threads in Lilith’s Love. So it became obvious that prequels are needed. The first prequel takes place in 1893 and involves not just vampires but demons as well.

EMZ: I’m excited to sink my teeth into that! What do you think the most difficult thing is about writing?

DAN: Editing. Writing tends to come easily. Research can be tedious but is always an adventure because I’m researching something I like. But editing is always difficult, because I can be pretty hard on myself.

EMZ: Is there any project that caused you more work than you expected? What would you do differently?

DAN: Hands down, the podcast for Lilith’s Love. I mean, I’ve wanted to do it forever, but I knew that once I started the project, I would obsess over every detail. I would have done a lot of things differently, but the most important would have been to record all of the audio and produce everything before releasing any episodes. I have heard folks give reasons pro and con for this, but after going through it all, I think I would have preferred at least to have had everything recorded first. Yet there’s that desire to get something out to people and I thought I could handle the schedule. Naturally, technical issues came up, illnesses, schedule conflicts, and everything else you can think of caused many delays that I regret.

EMZ: My greatest regret about your Lilith’s Love podcast is that I am not in it! How’d that one slide by me? I would have loved to play a part for you, so keep me in mind for the sequel.

DAN: Oh, I promise, Emz!

EMZ: Where can readers find out more about you?

DAN: Folks can find me on just about every social network. Look me up as either DanShaurette or DanS42. My wife, Michelle, and I host the Out Of The Coffin podcast all about vampires, which can be found at OutOfTheCoffin.com. If you would like to read or listen to a podcast of my novel, Lilith’s Love, you can find it at Liliths-Love.com. That site has links to Amazon for the paperback and eBooks. You can also find the podcast version at Podiobooks.com and iTunes. Finally, my homepage at DanShaurette.com has links to all of the above and more.

EMZ: Thank you for talking with me about your book, Lilith’s Love, and we will be looking forward to reading and hearing the prequel!

13 Questions with Dan Shaurette

This week on Horror Addicts, our theme is: B-Movies. For those of you not familiar with B-Movies, the definition of a B-Movie is a low budget genre film. Their “Golden Age” being the 60’s and 70’s.

Featured to tackle this theme is author Dan Shaurette. His story for HA episode 47, is “entitled Hunter’s Moon and is an old story of [Dan’s] that [he] dredged up and dusted off for the show.”

“It is told by Bill Johnson, a vampire hunter who went out on patrol one cold October night. That night just happened to be Friday the 13th and a full moon to boot. Dark things and darker deeds were naturally afoot.”

Though you may have heard Shaurette’s promos and name mentioned; this is Dan’s first time to be “ interviewed and featured on Horror Addicts.” I asked Dan how it felt to be here for the first time and this is what he had to say. “This is wonderful. I’m a huge fan of Horror Addicts (and Night’s Knights!) and have nothing but admiration for Emz and everyone who puts together this podcast. I am honored to be here.”

Many of you Horror Addicts may have heard of Shaurette’s novel Lilith’s Love. Dan explained to me that, “[it] is a modern vampire story (set in 1993, which is when I wrote it) that tells the tale of Lilith, our female vampire protagonist, and her search to find a new home. The hunters have found her in New Orleans so she and her friend Anna need to leave. They decide to go to Phoenix, AZ, hoping that no one would expect to find vampires in the Valley of the Sun. There they find Donovan and Christian and a couple of romances blossom. There’s action, romance, reincarnation, Wiccan magic, and ominous foreshadowing. I think it has something for everyone.”

I wanted to know what had inspired Lilith’s Love, this is what he had to say. “To be honest, it was kind of a knee jerk reaction to reading Anne Rice’s novels in high school. I love her books, but to compare them to food, if I may, they are like eating rich, heavy foods. Great on special occasions but you can’t eat that way every day. I wanted to write a story that was leaner, smaller, more balanced, and local. The idea of vampires coming to Arizona, which is where I live, I thought was a great hook and it grew from that idea.”

Even though Shaurette was reading Anne Rice in high school. The author grew up on The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving and The Raven by Edgar Allen Poe. He jokingly added, “[y]eah, that probably explains a lot.”

Not only is he an author, Dan has a “day job” as a software developer. Of course, I was curious to see if being a software developer affected his writing in any way. “The character Donovan in Lilith’s Love is based on me, so he’s a programmer and he created a diary program that he used. Some of his journal entries are in the novel. But, other than draining my free time like Dracula on a bender, not much.”

Since, this is HA I had to ask what got him into Science Fiction. “Seriously, I’m a romantic at heart. Science Fiction is just something I grew up watching, reading, and loving. Vampires embody whatever we want them to, and frankly that is why they are hip now and are always in fashion.”

Vampires are a reoccurring theme in Shaurette’s life. “[Dan and his fiancée] hosted La Bal Masqué Nocturne, a vampire-themed masquerade ball, in 2006 to raise money for charity. [They] spent more to hold the event than [they] raised, but [they] still made a donation out of [their own] pockets.”

Still, they didn’t let that get them down. Shaurette explained to me that, “[they] learned a lot and hope to host another event in the future. Hopefully with sponsors or with the help of a group to bear the costs.”

With all the talk of vampires, growing up on Anne Rice and Edgar Allen Poe, will Dan ever transition into the Horror genre? “I’ve dabbled with horror in my short stories, like Hunter’s Moon. Lilith’s Love has elements of horror, but it would probably get classified as Urban Fantasy instead. I might write a novel that is more horror, but as I said before, I like to balance my stories, so it would probably also be a comedy of errors kind of thing as well as horror.”

If you are hungry for more Shaurette stories check out his blog (DanShaurette.com). There you can find several short stories. Also be on the look out for more of Dan’s work in the future. “[C]urrently, my fiancée and I host The Out Of The Coffin podcast all about vampires, so that is something you can enjoy now. Plus, as I said I have sequels and prequels to Lilith’s Love that I’m working on. Nothing immediate to release there, so that’s the long view ahead. I have started a new blog at SteamJunk.com all about Steampunk and there’s plans for a podcast there soon. That will discuss not just steampunk but gaslamp horror and fantasy as well as weird westerns. Gear-filled genre goodness.”
