B movie books

When I was looking for horror titles that fit into the B movie category for the newest episode of horror addicts, I tried to look for non fiction or fictional titles that fit the topic. I was able to find some good titles for both.

On the non fiction side one title that I’ve read is If Chins Could Kill, Confessions of a B movie Actor by Bruce Campbell. If you’re a fan of the Evil Dead movies you’ll probably like this one, Bruce gives a lot of details on the making of the Evil Dead movies and how he and Sam Rami got the funds together to make the classic film. He also has a lot of the stories form the set of Hercules, Xena and from all the conventions he has been to.  The best part of the book is when he talks about how much he hates the Hollywood system and the backstabbing that goes on. Bruce Campbell has a great sense of humor and it comes through in this book.

Bruce Campbell followed up If Chins could Kill with the fictional book, Make Love the Bruce Campbell Way. In this book Bruce is unexpectedly offered an A list roll in a romantic comedy movie with Rene Zellweger and Richard Gere. He then has to go through several hilarious situations as he prepares for the role. This book is meant to be a parody of what its like to make a big movie.

There are several non fiction accounts out there on how to make B movies, one that has been on my to read list is Direct Your Own Damn Movie by Lloyd Kaufman. In case you didn’t know, Lloyd is the man behind Troma(The Toxic Avenger, Tromeo and Juliet). This book is all about making a B movie but with Lloyd’s raunchy sense of humor thrown in. This book would not be for everyone but it does look like a fun read.

One of the fictional books I’ve read is  called The Horror Movie survival Guide by Matteo Molinari and Jim Kamm. This one is a text book on how to survive monster attacks.  I got this book as a Christmas present from my boss at work a few years ago, while it does look like an interesting read it really does read like a text book you would have for school. The book looks at horror movies as if they were real documentaries and breaks down what you need to do to live if you are in same situation as the people in the movie, you also get a body count for each film and a recap of what the victims did wrong. This book was an ok read, it had some funny moments such as when the author describes how you would survive if attacked by the aliens from Independence day and then suddenly says oh forget it, its hopeless, you are all going to die. If you are going to pick up this book you should buy it used.

Another one  is The Amazing, Incredible, Shrinking, Colossal, Bikini-Crazed Creature from the Public Domain by E. Mitchell. This book includes all the elements that make a B movie fun and you cant go wrong with a title like that. A mad genius, a sex starved scientist and a beautiful lady assistant and mutant movie monsters on a rampage.

The last book I found is The Drive-In(A B-Movie with Blood and Popcorn Made in Texas) by Joe R. Lansdale. One night at a drive in movie in Texas, something falls out of the sky and strange things start to happen including a new god showing up called the popcorn king, this book also has a sequel called The Drive In: A Double Feature Omnibus.

Know of any other ones let us know on the fourms.
