‘AIN’T NO WITCH: CAROLINE DYE, HOODOO AND THE BLUES’
by John Linwood Grant

Hoodoo. Conjure-work. We’re going to the roots of root-work today, with music, material, and musings. My writing flowed this way from an interest in Cunning Folk, both European and African, plus the pleasure of early blues. I also have a love of Manly Wade Wellman’s character John the Balladeer, though that part only came to mind afterwards, when I was looking up early sourcebooks related to hoodoo (more below). The Memphis Jug Band was the real start for me, decades ago, with their “Aunt Caroline Dye (Dyer) Blues”, and it spread from there…

I’ve written about the Northern European tradition of Cunning Folk before. The hedge-wizards, wise women, and more, often – though not always – Christians, who could be called upon for protection against curses, hexes, and blights. Whilst Wicca, historical witchcraft, and voodoo or vodun, are fascinating in themselves, the real roots that interest me in the US are those of hoodoo.

“Because sometimes I’m waitin’ at the crossroads, but I does it how I choose,” said Mamma Lucy. “I ain’t one of your mamalois, voodoo girls or Sant-eria ladies, liftin’ their skirts when you come callin’, neither.”

I’m only a writer, exploring strange places. But you might find what follows interesting. Historically, as with many of the old Cunning Folk, the guiding principle for most hoodoo was belief in God and the Bible. Where Caribbean and New Orleans spiritual movements blended Catholic saints with African belief systems, a lot of hoodoo folk were Protestant in one form or another. Voodoo and hoodoo get confused, but they ain’t the same.

You might call hoodoo a dominant blend of African beliefs, with threads of European herb and symbolic lore pulled in as well. Much conjure-work links back to Ewe and Fon lore from West Africa. The lines got blurred, as people from different tribes and cultures were enslaved and forced together. They sought systems that might sustain at least a fraction of their origins and identity, including shared reference points. With time, some of these developed into beliefs and oral traditions that echoed the lost past but also reflected life in the States.

If this was a predominantly black road, it didn’t automatically exclude whites, because it slowly drew in folklore from European immigrants, especially Germanic ones. It came from the big slave plantations, but as the 19th century progressed, it spread into communities through freedmen and women and had value for many poor and disenfranchised people. It absorbed elements of Native American herbalism and became its own thing. Hoodoo. Rootwork is another name, from the use of medicinal or magical roots and herbs.

(Zora Neale Hurston, who we mentioned briefly last week, wrote a study of Afro-American folklore, including discussion of hoodoo, rootwork and conjuration in her 1935 collection of tales, Mules and Men.)

One written crossover example is The Sixth and Seventh Books of Moses, a magical text allegedly written by Moses, passed down as hidden portions of the Old Testament. A grimoire, a text of magical incantations and seals, the text circulated in Germany from at least the 1700s, passed through immigrants such as the Pennsylvania Dutch and entered both white general folklore and black Christian hoodoo.

John-the-Balladeer

The direct Manly Wade Wellman link slipped into my mind when I came across mention of Pow-wows, or The Long Lost Friend whilst researching conjure-work. This book crops up in a number of Wellman’s stories. This is another genuine ‘grimoire’ from the 1820s, by one Johann Georg Hohman, and was originally called Der Lange Verborgene Freund.

“Bind,” he said to someone over me. “Bind, bind. Unless you can count the stars, or the drops in the ocean, be bound.”

It was a spell-saying. “From the Long Lost Friend?” I asked.

Wellman, ‘Vandy Vandy’, (1953)

The Long Lost Friend is a collection of spells, charms and remedies for everyday use. Like the Books of Moses, it initially entered hoodoo through the Pennsylvanian Dutch and other groups of Germanic origin.

It crossed relatively easily into hoodoo because it also puts Christianity in the driving seat and emphasizes belief in the Bible as the core. ‘Pow-wows’ was added to later editions, in reference to real or supposed Native American practices.

“The book has remained quite popular among practitioners of Hoodoo… James Foster noted that many shops in Harlem and Brooklyn stocked The Long Lost Friend in 1957.”

Daniel Harms, The Long Lost Friend: A 19th Century American Grimoire (2012)

So, I was traveling 1920s Harlem in my mind a year or two ago, learning, and expanding my Tales of the Last Edwardian, when I saw someone passing through, one of the Cunning Folk who might resonate in her own time and place.

She was old like me, black like I’m not, and a foil to the industrialised, post-Edwardian scientific approach. Bare feet in the earth, and silver dimes around her ankles. A worn print dress on a strong, gangly frame. She used her brains more than she used out-and-out conjure-work, but she knew what she was doing if she had to lay a trick or turn a jinx.

I also knew that she held no truck with oppressive wealth and monstrous laws, that she was plain ornery, her heart with the voiceless.

‘She’ turned out to be Mamma Lucy.

Caroline Dye: A Mighty Fine Vision
If you write about hoodoo from around the early 20th Century, you can’t avoid the blues – which is a good excuse to mention some tracks here. You also can’t avoid Aunt Caroline Dye (not Dyer- the track at the start was named through an error or pronunciation or transcription).

Despite her association with hoodoo, Caroline Dye was a psychic, a fortune-teller – there’s less evidence of her performing the slower root-work, laying tricks or setting up actual spells. And typically, there were more claims made for her and her skills than she made for herself. People went to her for readings, and they went in their thousands, hopefuls looking for answers.

She was born to enslaved parents in Jackson County, Arkansas – or in Spartanburg, South Carolina. There are different versions, both of her origins and her death. The earliest suggestion of her birth is 1810, which seems unlikely, and the more accepted one is in the 1840s. As Caroline Tracy, a name which seems to have come from her family’s original owners (a phrase which should never have had to be typed), she married Martin Dye of Sulphur Rock, sometime after the American Civil War.

Called “one of the most celebrated women ever to live in the Midsouth”, she is said to have died September 26th, 1918 (which would have made her 108 years old – or, more likely, in her seventies). She was buried in Jackson County.

Caroline Dye was supposed to have the ‘second sight’ even when she was young, but became famous for being a seer after the Dyes set up home in Newport, Arkansas, around 1900.

Despite the dates above, others such as Catherine Yronwode of luckymojo.com have compiled evidence that suggests Caroline Dye may have been around longer. One of the problems is that there are mentions of her in music which suggest she was alive in 1930, when Will Shade and the Memphis Jug Band recorded their song about her. This details Dye’s hometown as Newport News, in Virginia, but the song’s music and a verse was lifted from the band’s 1927 song Newport News Blues, so that was probably just convenient (or locally popular).

Some have spoken as if she was around until 1936-37. This may have been the general remembrance of a notable figure. It may even have been complicated by the tendency for famous ‘names’ in fortune-telling and hoodoo to be adopted by later practitioners. So there may have been a second ‘Caroline Dye’, no relation but using her reputation.

Aunt Caroline and the Blues
Dye was “the gypsy” in the 1914 song “The St. Louis Blues,” according to W.C. Handy, who wrote it. He later names her directly, in his 1923 song “Sundown Blues.”

For I’m going to Newport
I mean Newport Arkansaw
I’m going there to see Aunt Car’line Dye
Why she’s a reader
And I need her
Law! Law! Law! She reads your fortune, and her cards don’t lie.
I’ll put some ashes in my sweet Papa’s bed,
So he can’t slip out, Hoodoo in his bread

In 1937, Johnny/Johnnie Temple named her again in his “Hoodoo Woman” song:

Well, I’m going to Newport,
just to see Aunt Caroline Dye
Well, I’m going to Newport,
just to see Aunt Caroline Dye

She’s a fortune teller, hooo, Lord,
she sure don’t tell no lie
And she told my fortune,
as I walked through her door

And she told my fortune,
as I walked through her door
Said, “I’m sorry for you, buddy, hooo, Lord,
the woman don’t want you no more”

Aunt Caroline Dye also crops up in “Wang Dang Doodle,” (1960) by Howlin’ Wolf and Koko Taylor. This is a curious song about rowdy merry-making. It borrows from black oral history, including lesbian nicknames of earlier times. The original reference to Fast Talkin’ Fannie, for example, used a word other than Talkin’.

Tell Peg and Caroline Dye / We gonna have a time…

Dye would read futures and make predictions. Her most commonly quoted method was using cards, as in Handy’s lyrics. It’s said that she wouldn’t help in romantic matters, though, and told people that they should sort their own love lives out. She did offer to find lost people, lost cattle and other items through reading her deck, or through her visions.

“Going to go see Aunt Caroline Dye” became a common saying among black people of the time, and as she grew famous, she became respected by many whites as well. She reportedly died a landowner with a substantial fortune.

In the 1960s, Will Shade spoke of her having wider powers. He said of her:

“White and Colored would go to her. You sick in bed, she raise the sick. Conjure, Hoodoo, that’s what some people say, but that’s what some people call it, conjure.”

Interview by Paul Oliver, Conversation with the Blues

“Seven Sisters ain’t nowhere wit’ Aunt Caroline Dye; she was the onliest one could break the record with the hoodoo.”

A Mojo Number
The Seven Sisters were supposed hoodoo women in 1920’s New Orleans. As usual, controversy surrounds their nature. Some say they were genuine sisters, others that they were just seven black women working together, and it’s even been claimed that they were one woman in different guises. The name also crosses concepts of seventh sons and seventh daughters being special. As with Caroline Dye, they were well known for their psychic abilities or clairvoyance.

They tell me Seven Sisters in New Orleans that can really fix a man up right
They tell me Seven Sisters in New Orleans that can really fix a man up right
And I’m headed for New Orleans, Louisiana, I’m travelin’ both day and night.

I hear them say the oldest Sister look just like she’s 21
I hear them say the oldest Sister look just like she’s 21
And said she can look right in your eyes and tell you just exactly what you want done.

They tell me they’ve been hung, been bled, and been crucified
They tell me they’ve been hung, been bled, and been crucified
But I just want enough help to stand on the water and rule the tide.

It’s bound to be Seven Sisters, ’cause I’ve heard it by everybody else
It’s bound to be Seven Sisters, I’ve heard it by everybody else
Course, I’d love to take their word, but I’d rather go and see for myself.

When I leave the Seven Sisters, I’ll pile stones all around
When I leave the Seven Sisters, I’ll pile stones all around
And go to my baby and tell her, “There’s another Seven Sister man in town.”

Good morning, Seven Sisters, just thought I’d come down and see
Good morning, Seven Sisters, I thought I’d come down to see
Will you build me up where I’m torn down, and make me strong where I’m weak?

Number Seven has its own significance in hoodoo work, as have the other odd numbers.

Conjuration
As to hoodoo itself, apart from mid-century and later commentaries, it’s interesting to read earlier writers. One source is Charles Waddell Chesnutt (1858 – 1932), an African-American author, essayist and activist. Chesnutt was born in Ohio, his parents being “free persons of color” from North Carolina.

His position was odd – Chesnutt was legally white in some States, black in others. In a shameful time of Jim Crow laws in America, many state had a ‘one drop’ rule, which meant that even if you had only a single grandparent or great-grandparent who was black, you could be discriminated against. North Carolina adopted ‘one drop’ legislation in 1923.

Chesnutt’s paternal grandfather was known to be a white slaveholder, and he would have had other white ancestors. Despite his outward appearance, he identified as African American, and apparently never chose to be known as white.

Here are a couple of passages from his essay Superstitions & Folklore of the South:

Conjuration

The origin of this curious superstition itself is perhaps more easily traceable. It probably grew, in the first place, out of African fetichism (sic), which was brought over from the dark continent along with the dark people. Certain features, too, suggest a distant affinity with Voodooism, or snake worship, a cult which seems to have been indigenous to tropical America. These beliefs, which in the place of their origin had all the sanctions of religion and social custom, become, in the shadow of the white man’s civilization, a pale reflection of their former selves. In time, too, they were mingled and confused with the witchcraft and ghost lore of the white man, and the tricks and delusions of the Indian conjurer.

The only professional conjure doctor whom I met was old Uncle Jim Davis, with whom I arranged a personal interview. He came to see me one evening, but almost immediately upon his arrival a minister called. The powers of light prevailed over those of darkness, and Jim was dismissed until a later time, with a commission to prepare for me a conjure “hand” or good luck charm, of which, he informed some of the children about the house, who were much interested in the proceedings, I was very much in need.

I subsequently secured the charm, for which, considering its potency, the small sum of silver it cost me was no extravagant outlay. It is a very small bag of roots and herbs, and, if used according to directions, is guaranteed to insure me good luck and “keep me from losing my job.” The directions require it to be wet with spirits nine mornings in succession, to be carried on the person, in a pocket on the right hand side, care being taken that it does not come in contact with any tobacco.

Modern Culture, volume 13, 1901

His collection The Conjure Woman (1899) is available on-line, and also includes the full essay.

Passing Fictions
Finally, there is one problem with writing fiction about hoodoo. It’s difficult to get right, and yet sometimes difficult to get wrong. People did make up ‘spells’ to suit them. And there are so many variants – styles of traditional conjure-work can be personal to a practitioner, or peculiar to a geographical area. The terminology varies across the States, and some branches came from passed-down pamphlets, others through family word of mouth. I always try to use versions of recognised conjure-work where I can, preferably form direct folk sources.

But it’s always interesting, anyway.

So Mamma Lucy is around in a number of my stories – ‘Hoodoo Man’; ‘Iron and ‘Anthracite‘, ‘Whiskey, Beans and Dust’, and ‘The Witch of Pender’, plus a few others. I hope she trusts me well enough to keep spinnin’ them tales…

Announces 2019 Haunted House and Attractions
Experience GhostShip, Vodou, and Murder Island
Four Bars, Three Haunted Houses, Two Stages with DJ, Aerial & Fire Performances, One Exclusive RIP Lounge, Plus Panic! 4-D Experience, Hundreds of Monsters and More!
Tickets available now at DarkHorizonOrlando.com
Digital Creative of Dark Horizon’s Vodou Haunted House

[Orlando, FL] –August 9, 2019 –  Florida’s history is coming back to haunt you as Dark Horizon: Point of No Return makes its debut in Orlando, Florida October 4 – November 2, 2019, with the first-ever West Coast-style haunt in the East. Brought to you by the award-winning creators, producers, and directors for one of the most terrifying haunts in the world: The Queen Mary’s Dark Harbor. Dark Horizon is pleased to announce three gruesome haunted houses, two death-defying live entertainment stages, multiple immersive bars, private party Bootlegger Bungalows and more.

Dark Horizon emerges in Orlando with much anticipation, to feast upon fears, fray nerves, and curdle the blood of its daring visitors. The haunted attraction is divided into different zones, each highlighting pieces of Florida’s dark history, myths and lore. “We really like to dive into local legends and history,” shared Charity Hill Co-producer for Dark Horizon.

The Port is akin to one of the late 1700’s pirate ports in what is now Florida. This zone features the Bootlegger Bungalows, Walk the Plank Pub & Pier, Siren Stage, Dark Horizon Gift Shop, Shark Bites and the entrance to the Marketplace and Panic! 4-D Maze Experience. The Port is also home to the haunted house, Ghostship, a disease-infested, loot-filled vessel adrift on the high seas. This phantom tall ship is filled with deranged and decaying seamen bound to wreak havoc in Dark Horizon’s Port. Will you live to tell the tale or will Captain Killigrew, the most feared female pirate in history, and her derelict crew be your demise?

Escape the clutches of one of Florida’s first serial killer’s, Edgar “Bloody” Watson in the haunted house: Murder Island. Known as a hotbed for murderers, ancient creatures and bizarre tales, thrill-seekers will come face-to-face with the brutality that shadowed the 10,000 islands in the late 1800’s turning it into a shallow grave for at least 57 of Bloody Watson’s sugar cane workers. Murder Island is in The Glades Zone, a virtually lawless land, home to the VIP Storm Cellar, Outpost Pub and Gator Grub.

Experience Sacred Circle Stage and Shelter Patio in The Village. This area is under the enchantment of Mambo Cècile and the haunted house: Vodou. The high priestess has awakened the ancient Loa Agwe, spirit of the water, so proceed with extreme caution through the foggy bog to the underworld Volikan.

For those looking to elevate their experience, Dark Horizon offers an air-conditioned R.I.P. Lounge (or VIP Lounge), called the Storm Cellar R.I.P. Lounge accessed only by a coveted key. This experience includes two complimentary cocktails and grants access to a premium full bar featuring Moonshine Tastings. This key must be used in combination with an event admission ticket, and is for guests ages 21-years and older. Want to skip the lines? Expedite your entry into the event and all the haunted houses with a Fast Fright Ticket (starting at just $74 per person). Or, enjoy nearly instant entry into the event and all the haunted houses with an Evil Express Ticket (starting at $94 per person). Looking for a high-class VIP experience? Spring for the most exclusive experience at Dark Horizon with the Ultimate Scream ticket. This privately-guided and curated experience is extremely limited and available on select nights. Fast Fright and Evil Express Tickets are limited nightly and prices vary depending on date.

With Dark Horizon’s disturbingly creative minds, 4 bars and Bootlegger Bungalows, 3 haunted houses and scare zones, 2 live stages, 1 Panic! 4-D Experience, and hundreds of Monsters, Dark Horizon is certain to be a screamin’ good time.

Dark Horizon opens its doors on October 4 and continues to scare those who dare on select nights through November 2. General admission ticket prices start at just $20 online with Happy Haunting Hour, Fast Fright, Evil Express, Ultimate Scream tickets and Storm Cellar R.I.P. Lounge keys available. For more information or to purchase tickets online, visit www.darkhorizonorlando.com/.

UNVEIL THE STRENGTH Release Official Music Video for “Hell’s Never Over”!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

July 9, 2019 – UNVEIL THE STRENGTH—-featuring Mark WölfeAndy JamesMatt SnellMatt Guillory, and Tim Hassemer (former members of Five Finger Death PunchSacred Mother TongueInvidiaFlatlineDevolved, and Stratovarius)–has released the official music video for their single “Hell’s Never Over.” Originally premiered on Heart Support, “Hell’s Never Over” was directed by Matt Zane (Society 1).

player

“We believe in Heart Support because they are doing something no one else has done. They are bridging the gap for mental health in a relateable way that people and music fans can connect with. On one end you have the music fans that are maybe going through something and feel Isolated , trapped, and lonely. On the other end you have people making music about the very same feelings. The truth is, everyone goes through a dark place, but we have to remember its just temporary, just a moment. Heart Support is never above, never below, and always beside you.” – UNVEIL THE STRENGTH

Unveil the Strength, a quintet composed of former members of iconic bands such as Five Finger Death PunchSacred Mother TongueInvidiaFlatlineDevolved, and Stratovarius are returning to the soul of hard rock: writing and performing real songs with real meaning. Says Matt Snell, bassist for Unveil the Strength, “We want to put the grown man back in metal – that spirit is being lost in the shuffle. We’re going back to the roots, to real fucking metal.”

Despite the band’s old-school approach to writing, they’re taking a contemporary approach to marketing their music. For their upcoming album, Unveil the Strength will not do a traditional record release. Snell reveals, “The landscape has changed so much regarding how to successfully get music to the public, so we’re going a different route. Right now, we’re halfway through the album and we have video concepts for every song. Instead of releasing all 10 songs at once that will just be put up on the internet to be stolen, our idea is to constantly release new songs all the time. We want to unveil this record to the public, with a video to go along with each song.”

Although the band is officially based out of Austin, TX, Unveil the Strength is truly an international band with members in London, Nevada, California, Colorado, and Texas. All of the band members have professional studios where they can record their own instrument’s tracks, so the group easily collaborates by file sharing.

Their first recording, titled “Foundations,” was recorded in Austin, TX. They wanted an edgier sound than what is currently being produced in the States, so they have been working with Rob Kukla of Studio Fredman and Henrik Udd of Henrick Udd Recording in Gothenburg, Sweden. Udd is known for his impeccable production with acts such as ArchitectsBring Me The HorizonAt The Gates, and Delain. The upcoming album slated for a 2019 release, is still in the recording process, but Snell admits, “The production is amazing on the new album. It accentuates that we’re an active rock band – but we’re a little bit heavier, a little bit edgier. It illustrates that we can write, and that we have an ear for metal.” Snell is especially proud of Mark’s lyrics, which he describes as “real.” Snell goes on to praise Mark’s extraordinary writing ability, saying, “Mark has had an amazing life. He is a Marine; a veteran. He’s lived on the streets, ya know? He’s seen and done a lot. He writes from his core being and writes real songs that relate to the band’s message.”

Press Release: Zwaremachine

Our friends at Mach Fox have a new project, Zwaremachine and they will be the feature band for upcoming #163 this season.

Zwaremachine – Be A Light
RELEASED: April 11th 2018
LABEL: Phage Tapes
FORMAT: CD/Cassette/Digital

Minimal Hypnotic Industrial Body Music

Minneapolis MN (USA) EBM project Zwaremachines first full length album.
Be A Light contains 7 original tracks and 7 remix tracks making up almost an hour of industrial electronics.
Zwaremachine is heavily influenced by early electronic artists such as Klinik and Front 242.

With an eerie hum Zwaremachine embraces ebm/industrial soundscapes while honing their persistent darkwave experimental approach.
Intent on trashing your sense of disbelief with eerie, deranged soundscapes and menacing grooves the album has artwork that depicts the strange world these songs live in.

The digital release includes an additional 7 bonus remixes(21 tracks total), artwork, photo and poster art by Paul Gerrard.

The artwork for Be A Light is a collaboration between Paul and his brother and fellow artist Mark Gerrard.
Paul Gerrard is a concept artist and illustrator from the United Kingdom currently working in the film and video game industry.
Paul has worked on feature films such as Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Wrath of the Titans and Battle: Los Angeles.
The band is honored to be able to feature Paul’s artwork on Zwaremachine-related projects.

You can order Be A Light CD/Cassette and other merchandise via Phage Tapes website –

and digital release of Be A Light here –

Band website –
http://www.zwaremachine.band/

“Zwaremachine are a trio devoted to minimal and militant EBM with a darkwave influence, reminiscent of acts like Dive, The Klinik, and Clock DVA. Their music is eerie and hypnotizing, centered on dark and futuristic soundscapes with cinematic qualities, minimal rhythmic and obsessive structures and loops full tension…Zwaremachine deliver an interesting debut full of neo old-school galore.

Instead of focusing on post-punk inspired moments and noisy, industrial experiments like some of their peers, they follow a personal approach based on the use of synth sounds and minimalistic rhythmic patterns. Sometimes dark and menacing, sometimes funkier and full of groove, they offer a wide sound embracing many aspects of minimal electronics and old-school EBM. A welcome addiction to the resurgence of old-school motifs in modern elctro-industrial/EBM bands.”

The End: An Apocalyptic Anthology

The End Has Finally Arrived…

Available Now Available on Amazon

https://www.amazon.com/dp/1979682712

The End Has Finally Arrived… We all knew it was coming…an Apocalypse to end all things. But how exactly will the world end? Will it be slow or fast? Will it be a zombie plague? A nuclear holocaust? Death from above? Or perhaps something less predictable, like a shocking discovery in an ancient tomb or an unnamed evil stalking us in the shadows? We asked several talented horror writers to deliver their best Dystopian fiction and Apocalyptic stories, and we were horrified by what they predicted. So open up these pages at your own peril, for the End is nigh, and you may discover it is more terrifying than you could have ever imagined!

The End contains short stories by talented writers, such as Shauna Klein, Dona Fox, Andrew Bell, Marisha Cautilli, Joe Cautilli, Brian Barr, D.J. Doyle, Howard Carlyle, Roma Gray, Essel Pratt, Michael Fisher, and G.H. Finn.

This is not your average apocalyptic anthology.  Sure, there are zombies inside, but the end is not always foretold by your favorite television program.

Press Release: Sueño Street

A young Latino artist turns down Sueño Street. The walls along the abandoned street are canvases for his murals, which come alive with tales of horror, suspense, and nightmare.

SUEÑO STREET is a graphic novel in homage to “Night Gallery” and “Tales from the Crypt” but with Latino flavor, culture and characters.

Other stories range in time and space.

The real price of dead man’s shoes. New and ancient betrayals in a canyon of ancient petroglyphs. Space explorers discovering evil on an alien planet and in themselves. A wife beater who gets what he deserves. A woman willing to challenge a horrible evil for love.

Differing in artistic style, the stories are weaved together by the consequences of actions, some deserved, others not.

Writer Patricia Marcantonio wrote “Red Ridin’ In The Hood And Other Cuentos,” which earned an Anne Izard Storyteller’s Choice Award and was named an Americas Award for Children’s and Young Adult Literature Commended Title and one of the Wilde Awards Best Collections to Share. Press Release: DreamReaper

Goosebumps Press Release

https://bandcamp.com/EmbeddedPlayer/track=2175898934/size=large/bgcol=000000/linkcol=8600ff/tracklist=false/transparent=true/After placing second in a remix competition for Powercyan’s “Disciples of the Night,” synthwave artist DreamReaper decided the best use of the prize money was not new equipment or software, but rather to purchase an enormous collection of original 1996 Goosebumps trading cards. After tracking down a seller, failing to negotiate a good price, and impatiently waiting for shipping, DreamReaper is now in possession of nearly 1000 cards bearing the classic images of haunted masks, sentient dummies, possessed cameras, and even one of a dad hooked on plant fertilizer.

As the artist put it, “In today’s uncertain economy, there is no safer investment than limited edition children’s collectibles manufactured in the mid-1990s.” In addition to hoarding the cards, the Phoenix, AZ based musician has begun to include them in merchandise orders and gives them away to fans at shows. Locally, he has become known as “that fucking Goosebumps guy,” a badge he wears proudly.

Today DreamReaper surprised fans with a special new Halloween release: a remix of the iconic TV show’s opening theme.

Available as a free download, “Goosebumps Theme” is a modern electro reimagining of the original that reinvigorates the soundtrack for today’s dance floor. The artist utilizes his signature retro-influenced synthwave sound to flip this ’90s TV favorite into a club-ready electro banger.

Featuring huge distorted French electro bass, creepy piano arpeggios, gritty slap bass, and enough sound effects to open your own haunted house, fans of Justice, The Glitch Mob, and all things spooky are sure to enjoy DreamReaper’s fresh take on this classic throwback.

DreamReaper’s “Goosebumps Theme” is the Halloween banger you never knew you needed.

DreamReaper doesn’t know when enough is enough, and is currently on the lookout to grow his card collection. He encourages any readers with large caches of Goosebumps cards to contact him.

Please direct all inquiries/harassment regarding this matter to mail@dreamreapermusic.com.

About DreamReaper:

DreamReaper is a Phoenix, AZ based electronic musician who specializes in heavy electro inspired by ’80s horror movie synth scores. Think the Stranger Things soundtrack on steroids. He has independently released two EPs, the latest being 2017’s Astro Blaster. As a reviewer on Bandcamp put it, the EP is ”a record that you won’t be able to listen to sitting down… irresistible and unstoppable.”

While the origins of the DreamReaper sound lie within the rapidly growing synthwave/retrowave movement, specifically the “darksynth” style popularized by artists such as Perturbator and Carpenter Brut, DreamReaper enjoys taking the genre in a more modern direction and is not afraid to draw inspiration from contemporary electronic styles including French electro, glitch-hop and drum and bass, as is apparent on the 2017 Astro Blaster EP and recent singles.

DreamReaper states it’s his goal to try make his music be as heavy as possible while simultaneously as groovy as possible, an approach he has been pushing even further on material for his upcoming debut full-length, due for an early 2018 release. The careful balance between these two elements is constantly at play in his work; a track is just as likely to have an epic electro drop as it is to have a funky slap bass breakdown. His recent Goosebumps remix is a perfect example of this dynamic, and only a small sample of whats to come from this promising new artist.

DreamReaper is guaranteed to sandblast your face off with his unrelenting assault of overpowering synths.” -Raccoon via Bandcamp

Press Release: Festival of the Flesh by Jim Goforth

Festival of the Flesh: Book Two

Peel away the bright, colorful facade of the carnival and you’ll find the hideous heart that is the Festival of Flesh.

Hidden within a seemingly innocuous horror-themed carnival exists something far more disturbing. Where those with dollars and depraved desires find everything they seek catered for. Hunted by mutant backwoods freaks, pursued relentlessly by the malevolent ringmaster who usurped their former boss, stranded in the deep woodland, and fasts running out of options, the remaining few free ex-carnival employees are about to be forced into a bloody battle that is only the beginning of a descent into sheer terror. Having discovered the truth behind the carnival’s existence, these desperate souls know there is only one way to save any of their friends from becoming prized exhibits, and perverse playthings for the sick and bloodthirsty. They must gain entry and take part in the gruesome enterprise that lurks behind the garish trappings and faux horror extravagances of the carnival’s new and improved version. Blood is going to pour like rain, to a symphony of screams. Bodies are going to stack up. The entertainment to be had here is enjoyed only by the most sadistic and degenerate of souls, and from all walks of life, they come, from every corner of society, seeking to indulge their sickest, bloodiest impulses.

Overthrowing cults with the aid of a new God

A secret cult operates at the zoo Carla works at. They pay doesn’t keep food in her cupboards.  All her clothes are second hand. There isn’t enough money to cope with management, preferred employees, and customers.

Starving before her wages land in her pay packet, Carla walks up the hill to steal some food from the zoo.  She isn’t alone. Induction night for the cult happens at the same place. They need sacrifices to the old Gods to maintain power.

Carla knew management were too stupid to keep power on their own. She didn’t realize the help was supernatural. She hides, looking for morsels to ear. Management know someone is there.

Left with no choice, and nothing to eat, Carla must overthrow the cult. It isn’t a simple case of one bad employer, but many. For underpaid, under-appreciated employees everywhere, Carla stands up aided by a new God.

Dani Brown is the author of “My Lovely Wife” and “Middle Age Rae of F***ing Sunshine” (both out now from Morbidbooks). When she isn’t writing she enjoys knitting and thinking of the finer points of invading Finland with an army of chavs mounted on dingoes. She has an unhealthy obsession with Mayhem’s drummer and doesn’t trust anyone who claims Velvet Underground as their favourite band.

Press Release: Backwoods Bonfire

A Horror Collection with a Twist

Horrific tales of fright told around a bonfire in during remote backwoods retreats are common among close friends. As each person tests the others’ ability to remain calm and resist the urge to look over a shoulder as the sounds of nature bellow out in the backdrop, only one may claim victory as the most frightening of the group.

Backwoods Bonfire inserts the reader into a group of friends that unintentionally create a case study on what horror means to them, attempting to coerce the others to believe that horror is specific, not fluid. However, one of the friends chooses to prove that horror is as real as the fire they all gather around.

TRAGEDY GIRLS follows two death obsessed high school best friends who take murderous action to gain fame on social media — a mix between MEAN GIRLS and SCREAM, starring Brianna Hildebrand (DEADPOOL) and Alexandra Shipp (X-MEN: DARK PHOENIX).

The Friday late night movie is an unclassifiable oddity that could never be found on mainstream screens: Peter Vack’s directorial debut ASSHOLES. Called a “microbudget cross between SALO and THE SQUID AND THE WHALE” by IndieWire, ASSHOLES begins as clever indie comedy before degrading into a mumblecore body horror that would make John Waters proud.

The fest continues into the weekend with such offerings as the Northeast Premiere of CHARISMATA, a stylish and mind-bending serial killer thriller from the UK, followed by a Q&A with director Andy Collier.  PUFF 2017 sticks close to its horror roots with the slasher flick RUIN ME as its late night Saturday feature. Reminiscent of the 1986 classic APRIL FOOL’S DAY,  RUIN ME finds its setting in an immersive horror game in the woods that turns deadly.

As always, PUFF will highlight Philadelphia’s local talent on Sunday, October 1st. Sunday kicks off with the Icelandic supernatural drama RIFT, presented by the Philly based distribution company Breaking Glass Pictures. Our regional spotlight continues with the world premiere of the Pennsylvania slasher film 100 ACRES OF HELL, starring professional wrestler Gene Snitsky, with a cast and crew Q&A. The local program will then wrap with PUFF presented local shorts on late-Sunday afternoon.

PUFF 2017 will take place September 28th to October 1st at the Proscenium Theater at the Drake (located at 302 South Hicks Street, Center City, PA). The festival will also include an art show in the lobby presented by local art collective The Jerks, additional Q&As with cast and crew, and wine and beer at the theater concession stand. Stay tuned for additional announcements, including more guests, PUFF short film selections, and the closing night film!

How good can a free book be?

Last month I offered a unique opportunity to my subscribers to download any of over 70 books for other authors for free. Many of you took advantage of this and let me know how much you enjoyed it. Some questioned why an author would do this and….how good could the book actually be?

The simple answer… is not so simple. The publishing world is undergoing some tremendous changes right now. Traditional book stores are losing ground to online book sellers. More and more authors are self-publishing instead of going to a major publishing house. Most people don’t realize that authors today have to literally create and audience one reader at a time. The Amazon business model is great in many ways but also very challenging, it does disconnect us from our audience. Offering an eBbook that you have worked months, even years on for a crazy low price or even free is one of the few ways we have of generating lots of sales/downloads in a short time. This improves rankings which, in turn create more visibility and equal more sales.  As an author, it can be difficult seeing your creation being offered so cheaply (or even free) but if you gain a new reader, it is a win for your future work. So, if you see me and others promoting free books from time to time — take a look. For the price of simply subscribing to a newsletter you may find a great new book or a new favorite author.

What are you reading?

I have friends and family members who love to share with me books or authors they are reading and I do the same. Many of you may know by now that if I am not writing, I’m reading. Actually… I always read, even when I am writing. Right now, I am in the middle of ‘Pandemic’ by A.G. Riddle.
This is one I would recommend to you. Perhaps you have read it as well if so, let me know what you think of it. I have no affiliation with this author or his books just like to support good work. In the last few weeks I have also read ‘Armada’ by Ernest Cline, (Great!) ‘Earthcore’ by Scott Sigler, Brad Thor’s new novel, ‘Use of Force’ and an audio book series by Craig Alanson  I’d love to hear from you as well, who are you reading now and what’s your opinion of it?   If you don’t want to email me just respond on my Facebook or Twitter page.

Press Release: Entertaining Demons by Daniel I. Russell

Your heart starts to beat faster, and you realize this is what makes summer so wonderful.

Synopsis:
ENTERTAINING DEMONS by Daniel I. Russell is at times vicious and at others all too real examination of the realities of being a teenage girl.

Starring in the reality TV show PI: Paranormal Investigations should be a dream come true, but for Molly it’s a nightmare. Between constant filming, unexplained occurrences waking her at all hours, and the scrutiny of her friends and neighbors, she is frustrated and exhausted. Unfortunately, the contract her grandpa signed says she can’t quit and she does need the money. Besides, the show’s host, Samuel, is the only one who wants to help stop the hauntings. Molly decides to ride out the experience, thinking that footsteps and rattling doorknobs in the middle of the night aren’t so bad.

Molly’s wrong.

Demons are making their way to Molly’s quiet English town, intent on shutting down the show. As the darkness converges, Molly is caught in a struggle among demons while desperately fighting to keep her family safe.

Will she survive the night? Find out in ENTERTAINING DEMONS

What fans are saying:
“Daniel I. Russell’s work has proven before to be terrifying, suspenseful, fast-paced, and gruesome: Entertaining Demons does it all again, and ratchets it up tenfold. Not for the weak of stomach or of mind, this is the sort of novel one will look back on decades from now and still remember for its grit, dark daring, and one hell of an ending.”
—Eric J. Guignard, author and editor, including After Death… and Baggage of Eternal Night

“In Daniel I. Russell’s diabolically dark satire Entertaining Demons, the damnation of teenager Molly is big business and the very biggest and baddest of the big brothers is watching. Make a Faustian deal with this book — you won’t regret it!”
—Greg Chapman, Bram Stoker Award-nominated author of Hollow House

Mr. Kristopher - Press Photo 2

Multi-various electronic music composer, producer, and instrumentalist Kristopher J. Gray, aka Mr. Kristopher, raises the levels of frequency in a colossal way. With a punk-metal background informing his darkly unique tone and energy, eclectic experimentation with natural ambient sounds—traveling the ocean and mountains to record almost all of his music with distorted sounds from nature–and polished production quality, Mr. Kristopher is breaking barriers with his electronic licks, core riffs, and hip-hop kicks that delivers an all-out head banging bass experience. Since 2011, the diligent former college student has maintained a busy show/festival schedule as well as promoting his music and career, managing to keep on a strict schedule with his college courses by utilizing green rooms and downtime between sets in his travels. Mr. Kristopher has created and developed a presence among the rising contenders of today’s top tier festival circuits. Throwing down on stages such as Dancefestopia (4 years in a row), The Gathering of The Juggalos, Backwoods Music Festival, Safe In Sound Festival, and SXSW. Elusive Electronic Music Producer Susan Gittes has released her debut, down techno-industrial EP, Alone, via Bishops Bloc Records.

“Susan Gittes did it! Introducing one of the hardest, darkest artists we could find with one slowed down, dark industrial techno stomper and one what we would call soundtrack-esque industrial nightmare.” – Bishops Bloc Records

Slowed down techno and industrial sounds drenched in darkness. Nobody knows anything about Susan Gittes other than what we hear in her music’; its our best guess that she is a psychopathic killer on the loose, with a sampler and a drum machine. Sometimes heavy on percussion while other times heavy on the synths and soundscapes, Susan Gittes definitely knows how to create a feeling. Regardless of who Susan Gittes is, this release is already getting some major underground techno support from the likes of D.A.V.E. the Drummer aka Henry CullenCorvad and Fear The Priest. When contacted about the tracks and her process in music making Susan only replied with “…when i make songs I’m basically acting on impulses, what results is often emotional leftovers from my last seduction.”

FLORIDA GOTHIC by Mitzi Szereto

Stuck in a twilight world between life and death…

A hit-and-run driver leaves Ernesto Martinez to die by a Miami canal. Then an alligator comes along to finish the job.

Being dead gives Ernesto plenty of time to think. He thinks about his wife, taken from him too soon by illness. He thinks about his daughter, the victim of a drunk driver. He thinks about his death as he watches his body slowly decompose.

Most of all, he thinks about injustice.

The meth head ex-con living in the Everglades. The judge enjoying retirement on the Gulf Coast. The son of a Colombian drug kingpin partying in South Beach. These men care nothing for the pain they’ve caused. But they’ll soon know what it is to feel pain.

Set against the sweltering bug-infested backdrop of South Florida, Florida Gothic weaves a darkly unnerving and visceral tale of sex, drugs, crime and vengeance.

“Mitzi Szereto’s dark night of the soul is one wild, soul-blasting old mother of a trip, plus maggots, cockroaches, and cocaine. Solid, slippery, bug-eyed fun.”—Peter Straub, Interior Darkness: Selected Stories
