Do you hear that… It sounds like… A… ROAR!

That’s because it’s MONSTER SUMMER! The biggest, baddest and most fire-breathing summer ever!

All Summer Long… COMET TV is bringing the heat with Godzilla, Reptilicus, Mechagodzilla and even a few Astro-Monsters for good measure!

Every Sunday through Labor Day weekend, Monster Summer has it going on!

Typical summer activities generally include outdoor BBQs, trips to the beach, and taking dips in swimming pools, but Godzilla fans may choose to stay indoors this summer thanks to COMET’s “Monster Summer” event!

COMET will be airing a double-header of classic monster movies every Sunday throughout the summer, with the first film each night featuring your favorite giant lizard and the second starring some lesser-known beasts. The Godzilla films featured run the gamut from his 1954 debut Gojira, to the silly Son of Godzilla, to the kaiju overload of Destroy All Monsters. As for the other monsters featured, you can look forward to campy classics like the King Kong/Frankenstein hybrid Konga, the Korean Godzilla equivalent Yongary, Monster from the Deep, and the legendary — thanks to Mystery Science Theater 3000 — Reptilicus.

“BEST WORST MOVIES” in March

We’re rolling out the red carpet for some of the best worst movies on planet Earth.

They’re so bad… they’re awesome.

Vicious Lips (1986)

Johnny Mnemonic (1995)
Cyberpunk might be all the rage right now, but Johnny Mnemonic was doing it before it was cool. Keanu Reeves stars as a data courier who traffics top secret information via an implant in his brain. Sounds cool, right? Not when that data ends up acting like a virus that could kill you dead if you don’t get the passwords in time.

FILMS ON COMET IN JANUARY

The Craft (1996)
Teen movies might want you to believe that high school was all about keggers and beautiful cheerleaders, but we prefer The Craft’s version of events. Featuring a quartet of angsty teens who turn to witchcraft in the face of personal high school horrors, The Craft casts a spell that leaves you wishing you had an occult stor on your local main street.

Sunday, January 21 at 6P/5C
Monday, January 22 at 8P/7C

Labyrinth (1986)
January will mark the second anniversary of the day we lost pop culture legend David Bowie, so this month’s COMET is honoring his memory in the best way we coul think of …. by screening one of the most iconic roles of his career. Back in 1986, Bowie stole the show as the Goblin King in Jim Henson’s Labyrinth, from the music to the costumes, this was Bowie at his best.

Labyrinth (1986)
January will mark the second anniversary of the day we lost pop culture legend
David Bowie, so this month’s COMET is honoring his memory in the best way we
coul think of …. by screening one of the most iconic roles of his career. Back in
1986, Bowie stole the show as the Goblin King in Jim Henson’s Labyrinth, from
the music to the costumes, this was Bowie at his best.

The Snowman, in Theaters Now!

The Snowman, in theaters now!

A terrifying thriller based on the novel by Jo Nesbø  is about a sociopath who calls himself “The Snowman Killer” who has targeted the one person for whom he wants to showoff his methodical, unthinkable skills: the lead investigator of an elite crime squad. With cunningly simplistic baits, he begs to have a worthy opponent with which to play his sick game.

When the next snow falls who will he take?

Based on Jo Nesbø’s global bestseller, The Snowman stars Michael Fassbender (X-Men series) and Rebecca Ferguson (Mission: Impossible—Rogue Nation)

When an elite crime squad’s lead detective, Harry Hole (Fassbender) investigates the disappearance of a victim on the first snow of winter, he fears an elusive serial killer may be active again. With the help of a brilliant recruit (Ferguson), the cop must connect decades-old cold cases to the brutal new one if he hopes to outwit this unthinkable evil before the next snowfall.

Charlotte Gainsbourg (Independence Day: Resurgence), Val Kilmer (Heat) and Academy Award® winner J.K. Simmons (Whiplash) also star in The Snowman, a terrifying thriller from director Tomas Alfredson (Let the Right One In, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy) and executive produced by Martin Scorsese.

more) to give Godzilla a real extraterrestrial beat-down.

birthday party. For the King’s 50th anniversary, legends from the last five
decades of monster mashing return for a futuristic kaiju feast. Godzilla: Final

An American Werewolf in London

One of the greatest horror films of all time is headed to COMET! Check out John Landis’ often imitated but never duplicated 1981 classic, An American Werewolf in London, and discover why it’s always a good idea to “stay off the moors.” The film airs on COMET on August 18 at 8P/7C, and again the following night at the same time.

Invasion of the Body Snatchers

Most of the time, we’re not big fans of remakes. But once in a while, a remake comes along that vastly outshines its inspiration. Invasion of the Body Snatchers, the 1978 reboot of the 1956 sci-fi thriller, is one of those remakes. Not only that, it’s maybe the best remake ever made, and with stars like Donald Sutherland, Jeff Goldblum, and Leonard Nimoy, it’s not hard to see why. The invasion begins on August 25 at 8P/7C, with an encore airing at 8P/7C on August 26.

Blacula & Scream Blacula Scream (DOUBLE FEATURE)

TWO BLACULAS ARE BETTER THAN ONE. Without a doubt the most iconic blaxploitation horror movie ever – and also probably the punniest movie title, period – Blacula has earned legions of devoted followers since first rising from the grave in 1972. Its success spawned an even campier sequel the following year in Scream Blacula Scream, and now you can catch both Blaculas on COMET in the same day. Blacula stalks your screen first on Saturday, August 5 at 2P/1C, and it will be followed directly by Scream Blacula Scream at 4P/3C.

Holiday Horror Viewing!

Holiday Horror Hits

By Kristin Battestella

Looking for something to do with yourself after surviving the horrors of unending holiday dinners, hyperactive family drama, and the fruitcake that will not die?  Take in these classic horror hits and worthy recent scarefests.

vlcsnap-4144648

Antichrist – Director Lars von Trier’s 2009 disturbing and controversial family horror drama opens with a bizarre and unique sex scene/baby death montage and gets weirder from there.  Only Willem Dafoe (Platoon) can make dead babies seem so casual- and I say that in a good way!  Although von Trier’s distorted cutting, angled filming, and scribbled chapter plates may be jarring to some, these visual cues akin perfectly to the unreliable feelings of distortion and downward spiral that such grievous loss can bring.  Cannes Best Actress winner Charlotte Gainesburg (I’m Not There) is a little annoying as well, but then again obviously understandable as a mother who was shebanging when she should have been looking after her child.  The altered perception of time, responsibility, and indifference bounces between the leads nicely as we progress towards plenty of violent sex, mental scares, and kinky creepy.  It’s all a little uppity considering the dirty subject matter, and certain audiences will definitely be alienated by the material-but the performances here win against the saucier distrubia. Put the kids to bed for this one.

Bride of Frankenstein – Despite its short length, over the top style, and bad science effects, this 1935 Universal sequel is a classic for a reason.  Boris Karloff (The Mummy) returns with Elsa Lanchester (Witness for the Prosecution) for director James Whale’s (The Invisible Man, Showboat) stylized tale in the spirit of Mary Shelley’s infamous creation.  The theatrics at hand add to the spooky atmosphere and morally ambiguous, hair raising drama and provide plenty of scary hijinks for both young and old.  Even the score is wonderful as well, being tragic when needed and even spiritual and bittersweet. Love, tragedy, death, angry mobs, misunderstood monsters- there’s something for everyone here!  Long time classic horror fans can always enjoy the great, campy classic quotes and old school iconography.  Educate the family while taking in all the subtext, layers, and quality storytelling here.

Child’s Play If you want to scare the kids out of wanting THE toy of this holiday season, then this is the film! Though dated, some of the 1988 scares may indeed be too much for the super youngins.  However, nostalgic folks can chuckle with Chucky’s naughty wit courtesy of Brad Dourif (Lord of the Rings, Dune) and enjoy the more intelligent mystery and suspense aspects here.  While the sequels certainly have their ups and downs, Chris Sarandon (Fright Night, Dog Day Afternoon), and Catherine Hicks (7th Heaven) have some fine moments here.  Die hard marathoners can continue with Jenny Agutter (Logan’s Run) in Child’s Play 2 or go really crazy with Jennifer Tilly’s (Bound) send up in Bride of Chucky and Seed of Chucky.  Child’s Play 3 isn’t that bad, but Chucky run amok on a military base is a bit much, even for this zany franchise.

Trick ‘r Treat This 2007 pseudo horror anthology is kind of comical- a diminutive pumpkin boy Sam (short for Samhain) pursues naughty Halloween rule breakers? Some segments here are pretty bad, even stupid and just preposterous beyond belief.  Somehow, however, writer and director Michael Dougherty’s (X2, Superman Returns) quirky style and lighthearted irony keep these tales- among them twisted school principal Dylan Baker (Kings, Thirteen Days) and seemingly innocent and Red Riding Hood-esque Anna Paquin (True Blood, X-Men) – on the bemusing side.  The ridiculousness is actually quite refreshing; especially against other recent horror pictures that try to be sardonic and miss or those copycat sequels and remakes that just take themselves too dang seriously.

The Watcher in the Woods Although this 1980 Disney thriller might be a little too scary for the super young Santa set, older kids and the young at heart who grew up on this spooky charmer can delight all over again in young Lynn Holly Johnson (Ice Castles, For Your Eyes Only) and crotchety Bettie Davis (What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? Hush, Hush Sweet Charlotte) as they try to solve the haunting events and disappearances in the forest about their grand English manor.  Yes, it’s a little marred by Disney’s influence and maybe some of the events here are a fairly typical now. However, some scenes are still as scary now as they were to me back then.  When my mother wanted to frighten me indoors from the woods surrounding our own home or prevent me from staying up to watch an eclipse, she’d yell, “Do you want to end up like Karen in The Watcher in the Woods?!”

HorrorAddictsCon: May Favorite Things – Emz Movies

My Favorite Things

By Emerian Rich

“I simply remember my favorite things, and then I don’t feel so sad.” ~Sound of Music

When I was a kid, that song from the Sound of Music was so cool to me. It seemed scary, but bright. The way the thunder roared outside and she spoke about how she would just think of her favorite things to make all the badness go away seemed to speak to me. Especially when nights were rough and I was hiding in my room after a particularly traumatic fight with my step-dad.

MY FAVORITE THINGS… it’s such a strong personal statement. It’s something that no one can take away from you no matter where you live, where you work, what crappy town you’re stuck in, or hurtful relationship you’re involved in. No one can get inside your brain and pull them out. No one can say they aren’t your favorite things because even if you are in solitary confinement (or had a childhood that was similar to that) and have not a stitch to call your own, your favorite things live inside your mind like old friends. You can think about them and smile about them and repeat their words, phrases, or melodies in your head.

So let’s talk about some of My Favorite Things, and you can post some of your favorite things. I bet we have some similarities. Maybe you can show me some things I’ve not seen and maybe I can open your world up to some new things too.

We’ve talked a lot about movies this season, but I thought I’d bring up five more of my favorite horror movies that didn’t make it onto my Halloween viewing list.

Brotherhood of the Wolf

In 18th century France, the Chevalier de Fronsac and his native American friend Mani are sent by the King to the Gevaudan province to investigate the killings of hundreds by a mysterious beast. – IMDB.com

Not only are their beautiful babes (and guys) in this movie, but there are some awesome shots. I love the feel of the movie and the fighting scene in the rain has got to be my all time favorite fighting scene in any movie – EVER.

The Hearse

Jane Hardy decides to stay the summer in the house her aunt left her when she died, to try and recoup from a bad divorce. Little does she know, her aunt practiced witchcraft and is still thought of very badly by the town’s citizens. As soon as she moves in, she is haunted by a old black hearse and it’s creepy driver. Is she going insane or is she truly being menaced? She meets a friendly young man and becomes involved with him, but is he and the creepy driver one and the same? – IMDB.com

This is an old, corny haunted house movie that I absolutely love. I saw it first when I was about eight years old. I was lying on our couch next to a huge glass window while it stormed outside. The story was really getting interesting… She’s falling for a man and reading her aunt’s journal about falling for a man… is he the same man? And who’s the mustache guy following her around in the hearse? Suddenly… the window above me shattered, showering down on me. I wasn’t hurt, but I will remember the terror in my little adolescent heart for the rest of my life. Is this the reason I love this movie so much? Perhaps… but I love it! There is another movie very similar to this one in time period and corniness, so if you like this one, check out The Watcher in the Woods.

Dark City

A man struggles with memories of his past, including a wife he cannot remember, in a nightmarish world with no sun and run by beings with telekinetic powers who seek the souls of humans. – IMDB.com

When I first saw this film, I thought it was the coolest thing I had seen in years. The feeling and mood set by this “fake” city in an attempt to make humans feel “normal” was just awesome. Sure, we had a few laughs about Keifer and my husband still jokes that Rufus Sewell looks like the lead singer of my favorite band, A-ha, but overall the film was just awesome. I think this film was the precursor to the Matrix movies, which I also dig. I love movies where the human population is tricked into thinking they are living a real life. I think my obsession with movies like this stems from my childhood when we moved alot and met people and saw things that looked really familiar… just different. My mother always used to say, “There are only a thousand people in the world and they just change to make us think we’re in a different town.” Maybe in this case, mom was right! She didn’t mention the bald men in black coats trying to eat our souls though. Hum…

Ginger Snaps Back

Set in 19th Century Canada, Brigette and her sister Ginger take refuge in a Traders’ Fort which later becomes under siege by some savage werewolves. – IMDB.com

So, I watched this Ginger Snaps movie first and I’m glad I did. This is by far the best and more interesting. The girls, who are beautiful and look like porcelain dolls, wander into a camp full of whacked out men who have been alone way too long. My favorite parts of this movie are when they are  in the snowy woods. The feeling the director got here is so real, you feel like you are there with them. The Indian dude coming to the rescue is nice, but the sisters and how they relate to one another is the real thrill to watch. I think this movie is just beautiful from start to finish.

Lost Souls

A small group of Catholics led by an ailing priest believe that Satan intends to become man, just as God did in the person of Jesus. The writings of a possessed mental patient lead them to Peter Kelson, a writer who studies serial killers. They think it’s his body Satan will occupy. The youngest in the group, a teacher named Maya Larkin, goes to Peter to investigate further and to convince him to believe in the possibility of Evil incarnate. Other signs come to him as he and Maya them take a journey full of strange occurrences, self-discovery, and an ultimate showdown – IMDB.com

No one else I know likes this movie… no one! It even has a 4.6 on IMDB! I mean, Look Who’s Talking Now is even rated higher than it. And I just don’t get it. For those of us who enjoy religious conspiracy films, this one is one of the best. Perfect boy, raised in the church by his uncle who is a priest suddenly realizes they are servants of Satan and have been raising him as a vessel. It’s all supposed to commence at this certain time on this certain date… I love the look in his eyes when the clock changes. And Winona Ryder is actually dramatic in this role. For me, it’s only surpassed by Prophecy in my list of religious conspiracy films.

Now tell me about your uncommon favorites, be they corny, old, or just unknown, I want to know.
