Horror Curated: When Hell Freezes Over, Blutgletscher

HCHHBanner

NOW AVAILABLE!
Issue #1: Haunted Holidays

When horror fans think of movies set in Hell frozen over here on earth, one of the movies that will make most lists is John Carpenter’s iconic movie, The Thing, and all the other movies that have been inspired by it.

Tom Shankland’s 2008 The Children and Mark A. Lewis’s 2009 Thaw—starring Val Kilmer—are a couple movies that nod to Carpenter that I love, but my all-time favorite movie that took its cue from The Thing is Marvin Kren’s 2013 Blutgletscher (Blood Glacier).

While R.J. MacReady and his team were in Antarctica, Janek and his team are in the Austrian Alps studying global warming. Blutgletscher is set sometime in the future as the melt rate in the movie is much further than it is today.

Blutgletscher allows us to assume that the extremely hostile shape-shifting extraterrestrial organism that terrorized in The Thing not only survived but migrated 9,743 miles to where this movie is set.

But more about that in a second.

Janek and his dog Tinni, unlike MacReady in Antarctica, are long-term residents of the station in the Alps.

He is employed as a technician to keep all the equipment running and he has seen his fair share of scientific teams and quite frankly doesn’t really care for them. I didn’t blame him, the members of the current team are pretentious and treat him like shit despite the fact they wouldn’t be able to conduct research up there if it weren’t for him, which is highlighted in the opening scene…READ more Horror Curated NOW!

Live Action Reviews! by Crystal Connor: The Exorcism Of God

Plotline: An American priest working in Mexico is possessed during an exorcism and ends up committing a terrible act. Eighteen years later, the consequences of his sin come back to haunt him, unleashing the greatest battle within.

Who would like it: Fans of Paranormal Activity franchises and those who loved The Taken of Deborah Logan

High Points: This movie didn’t do it for me at all.

Complaints: There are so many, this priest should have NOT been in charge of a parish and he wasn’t strong enough to do what needed to be done.

Overall: Really good concept but they just didn’t pull it off.

Plotline: In present day, a decade after the last of the Cabrini towers were torn down, Anthony and his partner move into a loft in the now gentrified Cabrini. A chance encounter with an old-timer exposes Anthony to the true story behind Candyman. Anxious to use these macabre details in his studio as fresh grist for paintings, he unknowingly opens a door to a complex past that unravels his own sanity and unleashes a terrifying wave of violence.

Who would like it: Fans of the Candyman franchise.

High Points: What I love most that even though this are slasher kill scenes, the killings take a back seat to the story.

Complaints: Absolutely nothing!

Overall: This is one of the most amazing horror movies that I’ve see in the past 5 years

Master Imaginationist and Instagram photographer Crystal Connor is the Chief Imagineer working for the Department of Sleep Prevention’s Nightmare Division. A Washington State native she loves anything to do with monsters, bad guys (as in evil-geniuses & super-villains.  Not ‘those’ kind her mother warned her about), rogue scientific experiments, jewelry, sky-high high-heeled shoes & unreasonably priced handbags.

When she’s not terrorizing her fans and racking up frequent flyers miles by gallivanting all over the country attending fan conventions and writer’s conferences she reviews indie horror and science fiction films for both her personal blog and HorrorAddicts.net

She is also considering changing her professional title to dramatization specialist because it so much more theatrical than being a mere drama queen.

Live Action Reviews! by Crystal Connor: Gaia

Plotline: On a surveillance mission in a primordial forest, a park ranger encounters two survivalists following a post-apocalyptic lifestyle. The boy and his philosophical father seem to have their own religion, and a mysterious relationship to nature. There are many suspicious aspects to their existence, but when the cabin is attacked by strange, post-human beings one night, she learns that there is a greater threat in this emergent wilderness.

Who would like it: Fans of religious horror, eco horror, fans of the occult, suspense, the outdoors, and anyone who love a damn good horror movie

High Points: I really believe this is more of a religious/occult movie more than an eco-horror. With that being said, I loved seeing the parallel between the pagan and religious beliefs and practices

Complaints: The black guy dies 1st

Overall: I loved it!

Who would like it: People who love demented families, cults, cat and mouse and psychological horror

Live Action Reviews! by Crystal Connor: Cultural Horror Starter Pack

I am so super excited for season 16 of HorrorAddicts.net: Cultural Horror!

Our goal is to increase content created by POCs by 50 – 75% of what we are currently showcasing. I am over the moon! For those of you who follow me you guys already know the content I share is predominantly from POC creators from around the globe.

This review is a little different, instead of the normal movie review everyone is used to watching I’ve created a Cultural Horror Starter Pack, counting down from 10, these are the films you must see if you haven’t already. This was really tough to do, but I had a blast doing it. So grab a snack and settle in, and be sure to let me know what you think in the comments!

Live Action Reviews! by Crystal Connor: Murder Manual

Plotline: Eight creepy tiny tales of terror!

Who would like it: Fans of short films, collections and anthologies

High Points: It is a really strong anthology.

Complaints: I have 2 and they aren’t really complaints. The 1st, tho the title suggest that this is going to be a manual on murder not all of the segments revolve around a killing. The 2nd is most of the marketing for this anthology is focused on the cameo of Emilia Clarke but this anthology is so strong that the marketing could have encompassed the film in its entirety and not just her micro short cameo

Live Action Reviews! by Crystal Connor: Amulet

Plotline: An ex-soldier, living homeless in London, is offered a place to stay at a decaying house inhabited by a young woman and her dying mother. As he starts to fall for her, he cannot ignore his suspicion that something sinister is going on.

Who would like it: Those who enjoy slow-burning films that stick with you after you turn the lights back on

High Points: My favorite part is how unsettled I felt during all the scenes involving the nun, and then when we find out who it was I was sent into orbit!

Complaints: None

Overall: I really liked this movie and I’ve watched it twice

Stars: 4 1/2
