Live Action Reviews! by Crystal Connor: Gaia

Plotline: On a surveillance mission in a primordial forest, a park ranger encounters two survivalists following a post-apocalyptic lifestyle. The boy and his philosophical father seem to have their own religion, and a mysterious relationship to nature. There are many suspicious aspects to their existence, but when the cabin is attacked by strange, post-human beings one night, she learns that there is a greater threat in this emergent wilderness.

Who would like it: Fans of religious horror, eco horror, fans of the occult, suspense, the outdoors, and anyone who love a damn good horror movie

High Points: I really believe this is more of a religious/occult movie more than an eco-horror. With that being said, I loved seeing the parallel between the pagan and religious beliefs and practices

Complaints: The black guy dies 1st

Overall: I loved it!

Stars: 4

Live Action Reviews! by Crystal Connor: Murder Manual

Plotline: Eight creepy tiny tales of terror!

Who would like it: Fans of short films, collections and anthologies

High Points: It is a really strong anthology.

Complaints: I have 2 and they aren’t really complaints. The 1st, tho the title suggest that this is going to be a manual on murder not all of the segments revolve around a killing. The 2nd is most of the marketing for this anthology is focused on the cameo of Emilia Clarke but this anthology is so strong that the marketing could have encompassed the film in its entirety and not just her micro short cameo

Overall: Love it!

Plotline: A woman searches for her missing son in a remote wilderness with the help of her estranged husband and a Native American friend. When an evil creature starts to hunt them, their journey becomes a fight for survival.

Who would like it: Fans of folklore, monster movies, creature features, and survival movies

High Points: The pacing and the story are both really good.

Overall: A pretty good way to spend a few hours

Live Action Reviews! by Crystal Connor: Callous

Plotline: Shot during a mugging a girl believes she woke up in a hospital, only to realize she is stuck in a coma. She endures the nightmares of existing in the in-between as she fights to wake up from her sinister nightmare.

Who would like it: Fans who appreciate low budget, film school indie films. Foreign films, dream-scapes , surreal films and stories about purgatory.

High Points: Strong story concept

Complaints: My only complaint is the English subtitles because everyone in the movie is speaking English. Its clear that English is the actors 2nd or 3rd language but with that being said you can understand them perfectly. I felt that the subtitles took away from the movie.

Overall: Short entertaining film with a strong story concept that I really enjoyed.

Live Action Reviews! by Crystal Connor: Deranged Foxhole

Plotline: 3 people go to Johnny’s house looking for Jimmy … and end up dead

Complaints: I don’t want to slam this film but there was a lot for me to complain about.

The first is how disconnected the characters were to the particular scene they were in. For instance: the very 1st thing Darlene did when Johnny opened the door was to wrap her arms around him in a bear hug because she was happy to see her dad. Problem is he isn’t her father. It’s never explained why she didn’t know this man wasn’t her father (perhaps Johnny and Jimmy are twins?)

The 2nd thing is none of the characters react the way you expect them too when faced w/a certain situation. For instance: when the mother finds her daughter dead in Johnny’s bedroom she just sorta stands there and waits to be killed, I mean except for the cop, they all kinda do that.

Lastly … the zombies (created by lightning (wft) ) who come outta left field even tho no one in this movie is playing baseball.

Overall: I didn’t ‘get it’ this one just wasn’t the one for me.

Where I watched it: Review screener provided to Horror Addicts from Gold Production.

Live Action Reviews! by Crystal Connor: The Head Hunter

Plotline: A medieval warrior’s gruesome collection of heads is missing only one – the monster that killed his daughter years ago.

Who would like it: Fans of sword and sorcery, folklore, vengeance. monsters, mythology and movies about men setting off on quests.

High Points: The fight scenes. For all of them except the last one is shot in a way that invokes your imagination and unlike Conan the Barbarian or any other Knight in Shinning Armor that goes off to fight all the horrors after each battle he returns injured, making the next battle all the more perilous.

Complaints: Some of the personal choices he is making, giving the things that he is doing monster hunting, doesn’t make sense and could have prevented his ultimate peril. Another complaint I have is about the potions and elixirs, there is a scene in the movie where he seems surprised about what one of his own concoctions is capable of and with as much time he spends creating them and what he is using them for it just seems unlikely that he wouldn’t know what it would do.

Overall: I liked it and I think you will too

Short Film Review: LION

Film Review by Lionel Ray Green

Horror short film Lion is a powerful condemnation of domestic violence against children packaged as an atmospheric nightmare.

LION - Official Poster

Released in 2017 and written and directed by Davide Melini, Lion is touted as the most honored horror short film in history with more than 260 awards, according to the director’s IMDb biography.

Lion is set inside an isolated chalet during a heavy snowfall in a dark forest. A family of three lives in the chalet. The scene is simple. An angry, alcoholic father drinks and channel-flips the television. A helpless mother lingers in the gloomy shadows of the kitchen. Their eight-year-old child, bearing a nasty facial bruise, sleeps in a bedroom, its walls adorned with posters of lions.

The child clings to a stuffed lion and prays unconsciously, “Help me. Don’t let them hit me again.”

When the father wakes up from his drunken stupor, the television is on a nature channel showing lions in the wild. The father clicks the remote control, but the channel doesn’t change. The parents are about to receive a dose of reality TV.

While Lion is a pure message movie about the deadly consequences of domestic violence against children, Melini still manages to deliver an effective horror short, packing a feature film’s worth of suspense and tension into his twelve-minute nightmare.

Master Imaginationist and Instagram photographer Crystal Connor is the Chief Imagineer working for the Department of Sleep Prevention’s Nightmare Division. A Washington State native she loves anything to do with monsters, bad guys (as in evil-geniuses & super-villains.  Not ‘those’ kind her mother warned her about), rogue scientific experiments, jewelry, sky-high high-heeled shoes & unreasonably priced handbags.
